1959 Jaguar XK150 S 3.4 Fixed Head Coupe
To be auctioned on Friday, January 17, 2014
$210,000 - $250,000

Chassis no. T835997DN
Engine no. VS1731-9
Body no. J9742
Gearbox no. JLS42919JS

Actor Ray Milland once said that "seeing someone like Clara Bow driving down Sunset Boulevard in a white sports car...was like a dream world." After his own success with a Best Actor Oscar for The Lost Weekend in 1946, he was able to work continually in Hollywood, and he even had his own mid-fifties series, The Ray Milland Show, on CBS, opposite Groucho Marx's You Bet Your Life on NBC. That success allowed him to live the dream, and on April 28, 1959, he took delivery of a Pearl Grey over red Jaguar XK150 S.

Like many of his contemporaries, Milland enjoyed using his car in the sporting manner for which it was intended, and he appears to have participated in slaloms, time trials, and road races in Southern California with it, before selling it in 1967. The second owners, the Billeter family, kept the car for more than 40 years. Additional details of the car can be found in the February 2012 edition of the XK Gazette.

During an exacting 2009 restoration by Classic Showcase, which has been photographically documented on an included DVD, the car was stripped to bare metal and comprehensively restored in-house. All body work and fittings were attended to before the factory-correct original color was carefully applied. A complete new interior was fitted, along with a new triplex windscreen, and all rubber was replaced throughout. The mechanical work shows the same attention to detail, with every moving and electrical part left in perfect working order. During the restorations process, a stainless steel exhaust system was fitted to improve the longevity of the XK150 S.

In recent years, the XK150 S has achieved National Champion status, boasting an impressive list of show results, including three consecutive JCNA 100-point scores in a single calendar year, a First Place win at the coveted Dana Point Concours d'Elegance, and a win at the Palm Springs Concours d'Elegance. These showings stand as a testament to the quality of workmanship and care that was involved to elevate the XK150 S to a concours-level National Champion.

As a comprehensively restored and rare model with a prestigious and colorful history, this Pearl Grey Fixed Head Coupe is truly a one-of-a-kind example. Coupled with an impressive list of concours achievements and decorated ownership, this Coupe presents the serious Jaguar collector with an opportunity to not only acquire a special piece of Jaguar history but also a chance to own a show-winning example that continues to shine in the spotlight.

This 1959 Jaguar XK150 is one of 199 fixed-head coupes built with power from an “S” -specification 3.4L engine during four years of production. It was completed on January 12, 1959 and was distributed through Jaguar Cars of New York to its first owner, Academy Award-winning actor Ray Milland, in Beverly Hills, California. It reportedly remained with Milland until 1967, when it was purchased by its second owner and later that year sold to its third owner. In 1976 the third owner disassembled the car to begin a restoration, which he was not able to finish before his passing in 1997. The car was then sold by the owner’s son to Classic Showcase in Oceanside, California, who completed the restoration in 2009. Acquired for the selling dealer’s collection in 2014, the car is finished in the factory color combination of Pearl Gray over red leather and retains its numbers-matching, triple-carbureted DOHC inline-six and original four-speed manual gearbox with overdrive. Following the restoration, this left-hand-drive XK150S earned three consecutive 100-point scores at Jaguar Clubs of North America concours events. It is now offered by the selling dealer in New Jersey with a Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate, an owner’s manual, several emblems from 1960s driving events, a compact disc containing photos from the restoration, JCNA judging sheets, and a clean California title.

The body was refinished in its factory shade of Pearl Gray during the restoration carried out by marque specialist Classic Showcase. Exterior features include Lucas fender-mounted side mirrors, Lucas driving lights, and a badge bar mounted across the front bumper guards. Badges are displayed on the bar representing Jaguar Club San Diego, Club Jaguar Mexico, and the 50th anniversary of JCNA.

Chrome 16” wire wheels are secured by two-eared knock-offs and wear Firestone Deluxe Champion wide-whitewall tires. The XK150 model was the first production Jaguar with four-wheel disc brakes as standard equipment, and the Dunlop calipers of this example were rebuilt in October 2019. The suspension system features an independent torsion-bar setup up front and a live-axle rear with leaf springs, along with hydraulic shock absorbers all around.

The cabin was retrimmed during the restoration, retaining the original color indicated on the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate. Red leather upholstery covers the seats, door panels, and dash, with matching wool carpeting lining the footwells, seat backs, and rear storage box. Additional features include a four-spoke steering wheel with an adjustable column, a beige headliner, tinted perspex sun visors, and a locking glovebox. The trunk is trimmed in red Hardura and houses a full-size spare wheel and tools.

Smiths instrumentation includes a 140-mph speedometer and a 6k-rpm tachometer. The five-digit odometer shows approximately 160 miles, with total mileage unknown.

The 3.4L XK inline-six features a straight-port cylinder head, triple SU HD8 carburetors, and a 9:1 compression ratio. Factory-rated output was 250 horsepower. The engine was rebuilt during the restoration, and service during current ownership is said to have been carried out in-house with yearly check-ups. Work in October 2019 included adjusting the carburetors and flushing the fuel system.

Engine number VS1731-9 is stamped on the block, and is also shown stamped on the pumpkin-orange cylinder head. Number JLS42919JS is stamped on the four-speed manual transmission, which features a Laycock-de Normanville overdrive unit and was also rebuilt during the restoration.

The Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate lists the original colors and component numbers as well as the original delivery to Ray Milland on April 28, 1959. Also included in the sale are an owner’s manual, two maintenance charts (one factory, one reproduction), and a collection of the following emblems mounted on a board for display:

21st Running Santa Barbara Road Races, 1964

SM Valley Touring Society Time Trials, 1963

“The Litre Bug Twist”, Litre Bugs-FCCA Slalom, 1964

SCCA El Camino Real National Rally, 1963

Vandenberg Wagen Kreuz B.E.S.C.C, 1963

SMiViTS Time Trial, 3rd in Class, 1963

Boeing Employees Sports Car Club, Santa Maria

“Let’s Twist”, Boeing Employees Sports Car Club, 1963

JCNA judging sheets reflecting scores of 100 at events in 2010 and 2011. The car also won first-place awards at the Dana Point Concours d’Elegance and Palm Springs Concours d’Elegance following its restoration. A statement on the car’s history from Classic Showcase and a compact disc containing images from the restoration will accompany the records.

Previously said to be in Lodi, New Jersey.

Seller's description:

Every so often, a piece of automotive history comes along that exemplifies perfection, elegance and significance that many try to attain, but few actually achieve. The Jaguar XK-150S presented here is a highly original numbers-matching car that is not only one of the marque's most elegant Coupes ever produced, but is a highly coveted show-winning example steeped in a rich history that separates it from the rest of the pack. With a gorgeous color combination of a Pearl Grey exterior with a luxurious, deep Red interior, this overdrive-equipped 150S is one of only 108 Coupes ever produced, personifying the elegant style that is part of the vintage Jaguar experience. From its previous ownership by Academy Award-winning actor Ray Milland, to numerous Concours and Show victories, this meticulously restored 1959 Coupe is truly one of the finest and unique examples available in the world today. This XK-150S was originally owned by legendary Academy Award winning actor Ray Milland, who starred in such revered films as 1945's "The Lost Weekend" and Alfred Hitchcock's 1954 classic "Dial M for Murder" among countless other films of the era. Mr. Milland, a native Welshman, relocated to California after signing on with MGM films, and later purchased the 150S where he regularly drove, raced, and displayed the Coupe. As well, Mr. Milland's Coupe was a participant in the Litre Bug Twist slalom, the Valley Touring Society’s Time Trials, and at the 21st Santa Barbara Road Races in the 1960s. From 1967 to the 2000s, the 150S had been in the ownership and care of a single family. In recent years, the Coupe was comprehensively restored, and has since gone on to become a JCNA National Champion, scoring 3 consecutive 100 point victories in a single year, including a First Place score at the coveted Dana Point Concours in Southern California. Throughout the course of its life, this 150S has proudly held the spotlight, stealing attention and admiration of the Jaguar faithful and public at large. In recent years, the 150S was the subject of an exhaustive, nut and bolt correct and proper restoration to the highest standards by Jaguar marque specialist, Classic Showcase, Inc. of Oceanside, CA. With perfection being the goal of a no expense spared restoration, virtually every component on the Coupe has been rebuilt or replaced. The vehicle was initially fully disassembled and photographed, with the body being entirely stripped to bare metal, with work done on the doors, bonnet and boot, all of which were then fitted to the Coupe's body. The 150S was then epoxy sealed and painted, and finally color sanded and buffed to perfection. In addition, new rubber, seals, grommets and gaskets, trim and all bright work was replaced, or re-plated. A new, luxurious and fully correct interior was installed and includes padding, carpet, door panels, dash and finely crafted leather seats that were custom fitted and upholstered in all proper materials. Mechanically, the 150S has been restored to perfection with a complete engine re-build to factory specifications, including newly matched and calibrated pistons, oil pump, timing chain, bearings, valves, guides, and seals. The Coupe's head has been completely rebuilt, along with the carburetors and clutch system. It has also received a new hydraulic system, and it's drive shaft has been balanced, and the shocks restored. The Coupe's chassis and countless other parts have been correctly refinished, along with new suspension bushings, new wire harness, a restored and epoxy sealed gas tank, and rebuilt fuel pump. All electrical components, gauges, knobs, switches have been rebuilt, rescreened or replaced as well. The Coupe's seat frames and stone guards have also been restored, and a new triplex windshield was installed along with new drip panels, stainless steel exhaust system, and a completely rebuilt transmission with overdrive and rear end. A tremendous amount of time was spent on detail and quality craftsmanship throughout the Coupe's restoration process. This 150S provides the discerning Jaguar collector with a unique opportunity to own a very rare and spectacular vehicle whose restoration is fully photo documented, and includes Jaguar Diamler Heritage certificate of authenticity and comprehensive restoration DVD. With its significant ownership history, meticulous restoration, and recent Concours victories, this XK-150S stands as a truly unique vehicle that embodies the elegance and timeless design of the Jaguar 150S automobile series. Don't miss this chance at aquiring a piece of legendary Jaguar motor history!
