Bonhams Collectors' Motor Cars and Automobilia sALE
Goodwood Revival, Chichester, Sussex, 16 Sep 2011 at 17:00
Lot No: 245

1960 Jaguar XK150SE 3.4-Litre Coupé
Registration no. 778 BWP
Chassis no. S825333DN
Engine no. V7614-8

Estimate: £38,000 - 45,000, € 43,000 - 51,000

Footnote:
Equipped with the desirable manual/overdrive gearbox, this right-hand drive XK150 was restored by marque specialists Robinson & Goodwin of Grismby in 2002. We are advised that the car was stripped down to the chassis and then rebuilt, with everything that required replacement being replaced. Works carried out included reconditioning the engine and fitting a new clutch, while improvements incorporated include larger front brake discs, an electric cooling fan and a CD player. On completion the vendor took the XK to Altea on the Costa Blanca, reporting that it 'drove like a dream'. Only 3,000 miles have been covered since the restoration's completion and '778 BWP' is described as in generally excellent condition. Finished in black with grey leather interior, the car is offered with sundry restoration invoices, current MoT and Swansea V5.

Car to be at auction 11/13

Auction description:
NEC Classic Motor Show Sale
1960 Jaguar XK150 Fixedhead Coupe
Lot No.: TBA
Registration: 778 BWP
Chassis Number: S825333DN
Engine Number: V7614-8
Number of cylinders: 6
CC: 3442cc
Year of Manufacture: 1960
Estimate (£): 34,000 - 39,000

Used regularly until 1995/1996, this righthand drive XK150 equipped with the desirable manual/overdrive gearbox was seemingly then stored until a complete restoration by marque specialists Robinson & Goodwin of Grismby was commissioned and completed in 2002/03 at a cost of more than £30,000. We understand that the car was stripped down to the chassis and then rebuilt, with everything that required replacement being replaced. Works carried out included reconditioning the engine and fitting a new clutch, while improvements include larger front brake discs, the fitment of a Kenlowe electric cooling fan and a CD player. On completion the then owner took the XK to Altea on the Costa Blanca, reporting that it 'drove like a dream'.

Our vendor acquired the car in September 2011 where it became part of his large private collection. It has been used only sparingly but has been enjoyed. This car could be described as being in generally very good order, though in our opinion, could benefit from attention to the paint which has cracked on the bonnet. Finished in Black with Grey leather interior, the car is offered with sundry restoration invoices, current MoT and Swansea V5C.

The same engine V 7614-8 is listed by Jaguar Drivers Club Register 1998 as in 824333 but it is correct for this car

A real drivers specification 150 SE described by our multiple XK150 owner/vendor as the best driving example he has owned

778 BWP is a Jaguar XK150 3.4-litre Fixed-head Coupe built to SE specification (manual gearbox with overdrive) and was despatched from the factory to Jaguar dealers, Rothwell and Milbourne of Malvern, on 9th September 1960 and onwards to its first owner, Dr. E J Fitzpatrick.

Little is known of the car’s early history, until it became the property of Bill Dick who had traded in his Series1 E-Type 3.8 with M.R. Buckeridge, Classic Jaguar Specialists against his purchase of 778 BWP. He was fastidious in his record-keeping as a detailed log of work carried out on the car and journeys taken by him from 1988 onwards testify. The MOT history and supporting information from 1986 to 2002 shows regular, limited-mileage use backed up by some detailed descriptions of attention to the car, including invoices from the now-famous Mathewsons of Roxby Garage, Thornton Le Dale in 1997.

The car passed from Mr Dick’s ownership into the hands Mr J Weatherill who commissioned a major restoration at Robinson and Goodwin Jaguar Specialists in Grimsby, between 2002 and 2005, costing over £30,000 to complete. The supporting documentation confirms an engine rebuild, rewire, repairs and paint to the bodywork and the current condition of the car carries evidence of the quality of the work carried out.

The XK was then driven to Spain in 2005 where it remained until 2009/2010, during which time the Spanish documentation confirms the car was maintained in accordance with the Spanish equivalent of MOT standards on an annual basis.

In 2011 the car was purchased by Mr A Wood who kept the car on SORN until purchased by our vendor at the Silverstone Auctions Classic Motor Sale at the Birmingham NEC in November 2013.

He writes; “Before me bidding for the car I asked Guy Broad to give me his view of the Jaguar and its condition. Based on this very promising report, it was collected by him and given an exacting recommissioning at Guy’s Browns Lane Garage. Since then, it’s been kept under a strict regime of fully documented service, repair, and improvement over my very enjoyable term of custodianship of this classic Jaguar.

In summary, 778 BWP has had over £43,000 invested in her since 2003 and remains in tip-top condition providing reliable and enjoyable transport to me since 2013. Although black is not the original colour, when offset against the excellent chrome it makes for a very special vehicle ready for many more years of fantastic touring fun.”

Superbly presented in Gloss Black over a light grey interior with chrome wires, it has been intelligently upgraded with the emphasis on enjoyable high-speed touring, including a Getrag 5-speed gearbox fitted in 2013 by Guy Broad, Coopercraft front callipers, Koni Classic dampers, electronic ignition and an electric cooling fan

He has also asked us to include the following; “The only known issue is that the clutch release bearing occasionally squeals a little – it has done this since I got it and may have been noted at the NEC sale from which I purchased the car in November 2013. Guy Broad suggested it would not require attention at the time he re-commissioned the car and it is something I have got used to and just ignore as it soon goes away. It is intermittent and may not appear but I am happier that people know it is not an issue of concern and may be a lack of use thing.”

The XK is currently being detailed and fettled in time for the sale and will no doubt look even more impressive when it arrives. This is a delightful example of one of Jaguar’s most stylish and elegant GTs, and will reward any inspection.
