This was a very well known car owned new by John Polson in Adelaide. It is a late 3.8 S and was loaned to Dunlop for testing on Lake Eyre for the Donald Campbell land speed record attempt in Blue Bird.

They kept and used it on the salt lake for eight weeks, and reportedly hit 150mph with half sized Blue Bird tyres fitted.

The car came back looking very shabby and showing signs of salt damage. It went to Melbourne soon after, and was owned by a number of people including very well known Jaguar character Duncan Fry who was an excellent cartoonist.

Duncan sold it and eventually it passed to an owner who moved north to Queensland in the late 1960s. The car has not been seen since.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
