    Seen on eBay:

This is a great example of Jaguar’s drop-head coupe. Only 1769 of these were built between April 1953 and September 1954. 405 were imported to the US. I have owned this car since 1985. The body, gear box and chassis are matching numbers, the engine is not. Numbers are as follows: Body – P2578, Engine B2731-8, Gearbox – JL23102, Chassis - 678321. It underwent a frame-off restoration which was finished in 1995. It has not seen a rain drop since that time, and has been driven only a few times a year since then. During the restoration process the car was completely disassembled and the body was taken down to bare metal. The few minor areas that exhibited rust were replaced. Metal body work and paint was meticulously done by CarShine Auto Refinishing, a vintage car restoration shop (Michigan). Complete engine rebuild (new valves, guides, pistons, rings, bearings, timing components, etc.) as well as machining to specifications done by Capitol Automotive (Michigan), rebuilt carburetors by Joe Curto, New York, new correct Jaguar (G. W. Bartlett) leather interior and drop head replacement professionally installed. Original parts were all retained where appropriate. All body mounts and other rubber replaced with new. Car has new stainless exhaust (Dick Ames), new correct wiring harness (Moss). Sony sound (I know, I know), but I do have the era radio that came with the car. Authentic shop manual and collection of EJAG magazines included. The car does not have fender skirts, rather is has the sport chrome trim rings. Car is shown in pictures without rear bumpers (I like the look), but I do have the restored bumper brackets and 1 re-chromed original bumper.

While the car is nearly complete, it is missing a few “nonessential” items that I never had the time to get around to getting. All parts are readily available. These include: windshield washer fluid reservoir and bracket, heat control valve, spare wheel, and tool kit. Trunk and drop head interior lights will need to be purchased but both items are wired to accept the lights. The boot has a prop rod but needs a backing plate and catch. The trunk handle is not hooked up to an interior mechanism to secure the boot lid. However, it has never been a problem because the boot lid is heavy enough to not require latching. The odometer works but the speedometer/clock does not. The lighter does not work, and the panel light knob and heater fan switch is not installed (heater and heater fan does work). The brakes were rebuilt, replaced with new cups, seals, etc. but will likely need some adjustment. Some additional chrome and wood restoration would be needed to get it to “high retail value” quality. While in excellent shape in comparison to many of its type I have seen on Ebay and at driver class shows, the car will probably need some minor maintenance attention for the discriminating buyer as it has sat relatively idle for a number of years.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
