This 1953 Jaguar XK120 SE roadster was acquired by the current owner in California in October 1979. It is finished in white over red leather upholstery and powered by a 3.4-liter inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission. Equipment includes 16” wire wheels, a black soft top, a split front windshield, dual SU carburetors, and Smiths gauges. The ignition components are said to have been replaced around a year and half ago. This XK120 SE roadster is now offered by the seller on behalf of the current owner with a clean California title.

The body is finished in white and is said to have been repainted prior to the current owner’s acquisition in 1979. Features include a black soft top, front and rear bumperettes, dual side mirrors, a front badge bar, and a single exhaust outlet. The seller describes evidence of body filler on the lower right front fender and a section of the door. A tear is present in the convertible top, and chips, scratches, and dings are noted around the body.

Painted 16” wire wheels feature knock-off hubs and are wrapped in older Coker Classic tires. A matching spare is housed in the trunk. Braking is handled by red-finished drums at all four corners. The seller notes the brakes were serviced approximately three years ago.

The cabin houses seats trimmed in red leather with a matching central armrest, along with color-coordinated door panels and carpets. Lap belts are fitted for both occupants, and features include a passenger-side grab handle, dash-mounted rear-view mirror, and map pockets in both doors.

A black four-spoke steering wheel sits ahead of Smiths instrumentation including a 140-mph speedometer, a reverse-sweep 6k-rpm tachometer with an inset analog clock, and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit mechanical odometer shows 62k miles, approximately 1k of which have been added during current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.

The 3.4-liter inline-six features dual SU carburetors and was factory-rated at 160 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. A 12-volt battery has been installed in place of the factory dual 6-volt setup. Work in 2021 reportedly consisted of replacing the ignition coil along with spark plugs and wires.

Block stamping W7777-8S is shown above and matches the chassis plate. Head stamping LA6685-8.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission.

The car is titled in California using chassis number S673746.

1953 Jaguar XK120 SE Roadster

Seller: WerksGruppe

Location: Sherwood, Oregon

Chassis: S673746

65k Miles Shown, TMU

3.4L Inline-Six

Four-Speed Manual Transmission

White Paint

Red Leather Upholstery

16” Wire Wheels

Dual SU Carburetors

Black Soft Top

Single 12V Battery

Stainless-Steel Exhaust System

Private Party or Dealer: Private Party

Lot #259366

This 1953 Jaguar XK120 SE roadster is said to have been purchased new by jazz producer Albert Marx and kept in the care of two other owners before it was sold on BaT in April 2023 to the late spouse of its current owner. Finished in white over red leather upholstery, the car is powered by a 3.4-liter inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission. Equipment includes 16” wire wheels, a black soft top, a split front windshield, dual SU carburetors, and Smiths gauges. Reported work since 2021 has involved fitting a stainless-steel exhaust system and replacing the water pump, generator, and ignition components. This XK120 SE roadster is offered at no reserve by the seller on behalf of the late owner’s estate with a clean Oregon title in the surviving spouse’s name.

The car is finished in white and is said to have been repainted in the 1970s, and the right-side door and front fender have been repaired. Exterior details include a black soft top, front and rear bumperettes, dual side mirrors, a front badge bar, and dual exhaust outlets. There is a tear in the convertible top, rust in the front wing boxes is noted and blemishes.

Painted 16” wire wheels feature knock-off hubs and are wrapped in older Coker Classic tires. A matching spare is housed in the trunk. Braking is handled by red-finished four-wheel drums, and the car was factory equipped with an independent front suspension with telescopic-type hydraulic shock absorbers as well as semi-elliptical rear leaf springs and Girling hydraulic rear shock absorbers.

The seats are upholstered in red leather and are accompanied by a color-coordinated dashboard, center armrest, door panels, and carpets. Lap belts are fitted for both occupants, and additional appointments include a passenger-side grab handle, a dash-mounted rearview mirror, and a map pocket in each door.

Smiths instrumentation ahead of the four-spoke steering wheel comprises a replacement reverse-sweep XK140 tachometer with a 5,500-rpm redline and an inset analog clock, as well as a 140-mph speedometer and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit mechanical odometer shows 65k miles, approximately 2k of which were added under current family ownership. Total mileage is unknown.

The 3.4-liter inline-six features dual SU carburetors and was factory-rated at 160 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. A 12-volt battery has been installed in place of the factory dual six-volt setup, and a Mk II cylinder head was fitted under prior ownership. Reported 2021 work included replacing the spark plugs and the ignition coil and wires, and service under current family ownership is said to have included replacing the generator and water pump as well as back-flushing the cooling system. Oil leaks are noted by the seller.

Power is routed to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission, and the seller states that the third-gear synchronizer is going bad. A replacement stainless-steel SE-style exhaust system has been installed.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
