This 1955 Jaguar XK140 MC roadster is believed to have been acquired by the current owner’s stepfather out of Tucson, Arizona, in the early 1960s. The car was later passed to them in 1996 and underwent a multi-year refurbishment that involved a repaint in Cream, an interior re-trim in black leather, and a rebuild of the 3.4-liter inline-six. The roadster was later fitted with a Tremec five-speed manual transmission in 2014 as well as Wilwood front disc brakes in 2022. It rides on 16″ wire wheels and is further equipped with a black soft top, Lucas fog lights, Simpson lap belts, and dual SU carburetors. This XK140 is now offered on behalf of the owner by Sierra Classic Sportscar—a BaT Local Partner—with a Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate, refurbishment records, spare parts, and a clean California title in the owner’s name.
Finished from the factory in Cream, the car was stripped and underwent bodywork as well as a repaint by Brian Moore Restorations of Rancho Cordova, California, as part of the aforementioned late 1990s refurbishment. A split windshield is paired with a replacement black soft top, and further details include Lucas fog lights, fender-mounted mirrors, dual exhaust outlets, and full-width chrome bumpers with overriders. The wiper motors were rebuilt in 2023.
The 16″ wire wheels are secured with two-ear knock-0ffs and mounted with Vredestein Sprint Classic tires, while a matching spare with an older Avon tire is stored under the trunk floor. Wilwood front disc brakes were retrofitted in 2022. The rear brake shoes were changed in 2023, and work in 2024 involved replacing the brake master cylinder as well as adjusting the parking brake.
The adjustable seats were re-upholstered in black leather with red piping as part of the late 1990s refurbishment, and matching trim extends to the dash as well as the door panels. The seats are paired with Simpson latch-and-link belts, and further appointments include a cabin heater, a defroster, a cowl-mounted rear-view mirror, and door storage pockets. Electrical repairs were performed in 2022, and the choke temperature switch was changed in 2023.
A four-spoke steering wheel sits ahead of centrally mounted Smiths instrumentation consisting of a reverse-sweep 6k-rpm tachometer, a 140-mph speedometer, and an ammeter alongside gauges for oil pressure, water temperature, and fuel level. The fuel-level gauge was rebuilt in 2022, while work in 2023 involved repairing the horn as well as replacing the speedometer cable. The five-digit odometer is believed to have been reset around the time of the refurbishment and now shows 2,200 miles. True mileage is unknown.
The 3.4-liter inline-six was equipped from the factory with a C-type cylinder head as well as dual SU carburetors and was rated at 220 horsepower. The engine was rebuilt by British Car Service of Sacramento, California, in 1997. Work in 2022 involved tuning the carburetors as well as replacing the fuel tank sending unit and ignition wires.
The retrofitted Tremec five-speed manual transmission was installed in 2014.
A composite photo of identification markings on the car is shown above.
The Production Record Trace Certificate from the Jaguar Heritage Trust lists factory identification numbers and colors along with an April 21, 1955, date of manufacture and initial distribution through Hornburg in Los Angeles, California.
