1950 Jaguar XK120 Roadster

This very early steel-bodied XK120 Roadster – one of the first delivered to Australia – was completed on May 26, 1950 and delivered through Melbourne retailer Brylaws the following month. The first owner is recorded as a Mr Debenham of Toorak, Victoria who advertised the Jaguar in the January 1954 edition of Australian Motor Sports magazine. The Jaguar’s history has been well documented in John Elmgreen and Terry McGrath’s excellent reference book “The Jaguar XK120 in the Southern Hemisphere” including changes of ownership and details of its condition. Originally finished in red with contrasting biscuit and red trim, the car was located in West Australia until the late 1960s and was raced at Byford and Caversham by local drivers. The Jaguar returned to the East Coast in “totally original but tatty condition” before being refurbished and offered for sale in 1974 with a new engine, fresh paint, tyres and brakes. After changing hands in Sydney a few more times the XK120 headed north to Queensland and was sold to the current long-term owner in July 1979, by which time it had been repainted dark green. An exhaustive restoration ensued, returning the Jaguar to the original red (albeit a darker shade) with black leather upholstery and the car became a regular entrant at Jaguar Car Club concours in Sydney through the 1980s. Used less and less frequently as family and life took over, the Jaguar has developed a lovely patina of age over the last four decades and was upgraded with a five-speed gearbox in 2014 , along with new chrome wire wheels and tyres in 2019, a new radiator and thermo fan. Invoices on file show the car has been variously worked on by specialists like The Classic Car Garage and Graeme Lord, the latter giving the car a major service as recently as January 2021, including overhauling the carburettors. The engine currently fitted to the car is a 3.4-litre block that has been numbered to match the original (W1211-7) but the original engine block and gearbox have survived with the car and both are included in the sale, along with the original steel wheels and hubcaps. Currently registered in NSW until December 2021, the Jaguar comes with a number of spare parts supplied.
