Car to be at auction 8/12
www.classic-auctions.com/Auctions/08-08-2012-DonningtonPriory-1320/1952JaguarXK1 ...

Auction description:
Donnington Priory: 08/08/2012
1952 Jaguar XK120 Roadster
Estimate: (£) 70,000 - 80,000
Reg Number: WSL 454
Chassis Number: 6610020
Engine Number: NE1713-8
Cc: 3800
Body Colour: O.E.W.
Trim Colour: Red
MOT ExpiryDate: April 2013

This smartly presented right-hand drive XK120 Roadster hails from 1952 and is apparently one of the last to feature separate chrome sidelights. It was purchased by the vendor in 1998 and then treated to three years of restoration and sympathetic upgrades with sporty/long distance Continental motoring in mind. The Jaguar's chassis was modified to accept XK150 telescopic dampers in place of the standard lever arm units and then shot blasted and powder coated. The body was extensively overhauled by Leaping Cats before being repainted in Old English White, fully retrimmed in Red leather and equipped with a new mohair hood, side screens and tonneau cover. The instruments and wiper motor were overhauled and the brightwork parts refurbished or replaced, as were the: engine mountings, steering box and idler, splined wheel hubs, brake pipes, propshaft, rear springs, balls joints, steering and suspension bushes, wheel bearings and wiring loom, while the radiator was equipped with a high performance core and the standard exhaust replaced with a twin pipe stainless steel system. The upgrades include:

Engine - the fitting of a 3.8-litre XLK unit updated by VSE to Stage One specification complete with 2 inch SU carburettors and high lift camshafts

Transmission - the replacement of the standard gearbox with a five-speed Getrag unit and the 2HA Salisbury rear axle with a 4HA one equipped with 3.3:1 Powerlock differential

Brakes - front: four-pot XJ6 calipers; rear: XK150 units

Electrics - new electronic ignition, hi-torque starter motor, alternator, electric fan, air horns, halogen headlamp bulbs, electric washers and front indicators

Other items - 15-inch chrome wire wheels shod with Michelin radial tyres, C-Type bucket seats installed as low and far back as possible, central console equipped with CD/radio, laminated front screens, full harness seat belts, removable rear quarter mirrors.

The vendor now considers the bodywork, paintwork, interior trim, engine and transmission to all be in "excellent" order and informs us that 'WSL 454' has been regularly maintained during the 8,800 miles covered since the restoration and currently requires no work to be done. The Jaguar's MOT is valid into April of next year.

1952 Jaguar XK120 Roadster RHD

Colour White

Odometer 9,500 Miles

Engine size 3800

Location London

Country United Kingdom

Body restored by Leaping Cats

Fast-road 3.8 engine by VSE

Extensive history file

Beautiful condition inside and out

Incredible fun to drive

This is an XK120 with an intriguing history and a truly desirable spec. We can see from the Heritage certificate that this Jaguar was originally supplied by a dealer in Lincolnshire, in Pastel Blue with a French Grey hood – reportedly the sixth-from-last of the chrome-sidelight models built.

At some point in its life it was exported overseas, before being repatriated in 2001 and registered with the DVLA in April of that year, as the V5 shows.

In the period since then, rather a lot of work has been carried out to transform this classically styled roadster into a mighty fast-road weapon. Now resplendent in a crisp shade of Old English White with a rakish red leather interior and matching hood.

The transformation under the skin has been remarkable too, with a fast-road 3.8 engine installed – full details in the ‘mechanicals’ section below. The chassis has also been fully restored and rebuilt with upgraded brakes and suspension.

An outstanding creation that will provide much entertainment for its next keeper.

The Paperwork

This Jaguar comes with a sizeable and robust history file. The all-important Heritage certificate is present, and the V5 confirms the same VIN. Also on the V5 we can see that the car is noted as manufactured in 1952, registered on repatriation in April 2001, with the current owner having had it since October 2014.

There are a number of mementoes from a life well lived, including a ‘Certificate of Speeding’ from the 2010 Jaguar Speed Trial in which the car was clocked at an impressive 128.93mph.

There’s photographic evidence of the body restoration, along with a thick sheaf of old MOT certificates. We also find a great many receipts and invoices from throughout the Jaguar’s life detailing parts acquired and work carried out.

The Interior

The interior has been beautifully reimagined with C-Type bucket seats trimmed in red leather, along with matching red carpets and dash, plus harness-type belts.

The gauges have been rebuilt and are all functioning as they should, and registering the correct temperatures and pressures. A Pioneer CD head unit has been fitted, with speakers hidden underneath the dash, but otherwise it all looks appropriately period. The seats tilt forward correctly to allow access to the soft-top hood and the battery.

Inside the boot everything’s present and correct. The carpet is a little moth-eaten, although this would be an easy thing to replace if required, and it’s all dry underneath. The correct spare wire wheel is in the lower aperture.

The Exterior

The body has been restored, being stripped down and rebuilt by the artisans at Leaping Cats, and it’s a beautiful job with the car presenting very well indeed throughout.

All of the panels sit straight and true with a good paint finish, and we see no signs of surface corrosion. The doors and boot open freely and close securely, and the roof is excellent: it’s a tasteful mohair item that’s extremely easy to fit, securing perfectly and with additional removable side windows which secure to the doors.

There’s also a matching tonneau cover to protect the interior when parked up with the hood down, and this is equally tidy and easy to fit. The car wears 15” wire wheels in superb condition, with matching Michelin tyres that have plenty of tread.

All of the chrome trim is present and in lovely condition, and the side vents pop open correctly with the internal levers. Subtle front indicators are fitted, and the headlights upgraded with quartz halogen bulbs.

Truly a delightful car to behold, and that ‘JAG’ registration number really tops it off.

The Mechanicals

Perhaps the most impressive element of an extremely impressive car, the mechanicals of this Jaguar are really quite something. The engine is a MkIX 3.8-litre straight-six, rebuilt by VSE to fast-road specification with twin 2” SU HD8 carbs and high-lift cams, mated to a Getrag XJ-S five-speed gearbox and running back to a rebuilt rear axle with a Powr-Lok diff.

There’s a custom stainless exhaust system, new wiring loom, new fuel pump, new alternator, new modern high-torque starter motor, and the choke has been converted from thermostatic to a manual switch under the dash.

The chassis has been shot-blasted, powder-coated and rebuilt with all new bushes, joints and bearings. There’s a new fuel tank, and the brakes have been upgraded to an XJ6 disc setup at the front and XK150 discs out back.

The handbrake calipers have been rebuilt and new handbrake cables fitted. The radiator has been re-cored with a modern and more efficient core, and fitted with a thermostatic electric Kenlowe fan.

The steering box was rebuilt, the propshaft rebuilt and balanced, new wheel hubs fitted, and new springs and shock absorbers (with the rear converted to XK150-style telescopic shocks).

Air horns are fitted, the wiper motor was rebuilt, and electric windscreen washers operating from a switch under the dash.

In short, a heck of a lot of work has gone into this Jaguar. As a result, it is eminently usable, absolutely joyous to drive, and it really does sound like a race car.

1952 Jaguar XK120 Roadster

Lot Number 227 Registration UK registered Chassis Number 661020 Engine Number NE1713-8 Odometer reading 9,620 miles Estimate No Reserve

Fast road specification

Upgraded brakes

This beautiful 1952 Jaguar XK120 Roadster is a 1952 car and said to be sixth from last of the chrome sidelight models. It presents wonderfully in the classic colour combination of Old English White with a red leather interior. We are informed that earlier works included the fitting of telescopic shock absorbers and the rebuilding of the rear axle with a power lock differential and the fitting of a Kenlowe electric fan. The brakes were upgraded to XJ6 disc brakes to the front and XK150 rear disc brakes. The engine is a 3.8 litre straight-six example from a Jaguar Mk. IX to fast road specification and features twin SU carburettors. The gearbox is a five speed Getrag example. Although this very usable XK120 performed well on a recent test drive it does appear to have a number of rubber suspension bushes and gaiters that are perished and will require replacing. Inspection of this vehicle is encouraged.
