- Believed to be matching-numbers factory RHD XK120 DHC
- Documented by a Heritage Certificate, with great history
- Ground-up restoration recently completed

This stunning Jaguar XK120 has enjoyed a remarkable journey in the near 61 years since it rolled off the line at Browns Lane. The Jaguar was built as a drophead coupe in factory right-hand drive, making it the rarest '120' variant (if one discounts the alloy-bodied roadsters), with just 294 completed in this configuration from the total production of just over 11,000. With chassis number '667287', this was also one of the very last DHCs built, being completed on July 7, 1954 and finished in Pastel Blue with matching upholstery and a French Grey hood. Although issued with a Coventry registration mark (NRW 202), the Jaguar was actually delivered via the London distributors Henlys to the first owner Prince Alex de Desta, a member of the Eritrean royal family. Born Leul Iskinder Desta on August 6, 1934, Prince de Desta was the child of Ras Desta Damtew, an Ethiopian nobleman, and Princess Tenagnework, daughter of Emperor Haile Selassie. With the Emperor and his family forced to flee Eritrea the year after his birth, Alex was raised and educated in the United Kingdom in exile, passing through the Britannia Royal Naval College before joining the newly established Imperial Ethiopian Navy as a sub-lieutenant in 1955. It must have been during his final year at the college that a young Prince de Desta took delivery of his new Jaguar. One can only speculate on what adventures the Prince enjoyed in his new toy, nor do we know how long he retained the car but it would not be beyond the realms of possibility that the Emperor himself was a passenger. Rumours persist the car ended up in Japan before ending up in Wichita, Kansas of all places and the current owner has even succeeded in tracking down the original owner there, who ran a local speedway. This gentleman recalled selling the car to a mining engineer, who intended to restore the XK but never got around to it and eventually passed the car to a shop in California, where the current owner first set eyes on it back in 2012. By now the Jaguar was looking very tired but the bare bones were there, including the original engine block. In partnership with a fellow club member, the two men embarked on a total nut-and-bolt rebuild carried out over the next two-years, restoring the XK120 back to its former glory. Presenting in lovely condition and in the colours specified on the Heritage Certificate, this fabulous Jaguar is registered in NSW until September 2015 and is not to be missed.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
