According to David Bentley, XK Club Registrar (2006) this 120 is the ex. Mansbridge Alpine Rally car.

Bernard Viart's book "Jaguar XK - la competition sur route dans les annees 1950" page 50 shows this photo and says that this is the 1953 Rallye des Alpes with Reg and Joan Mansbridge team and the location is the Col du Gavia Italy at more than 2000 metres. Registration GFE 111, rally number 611.

Additionally the photo of the car with the roof rack was taken on the 1954 Rally des Alpes, the crew being Mr and Mrs Mansbridge. Bernard Viart's book "Jaguar XK - la competition sur route dans les annees 1950" has a photo of this car on page 55, taken at the start of the rally. The photo clearly shows the custom-made roof rack, the twin rectangular drive lights below the front bumper and the array of club badges above the bumper. Also the rally number 622 is displayed on the rally plate.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
