Dealer is in Sag Harbor, New York.

    Sellers description:
    1949 JAGUAR XK120 - alloy body/VIN #670025
The car on offer, the thirty-fifth built, was one of very few exported in left-have-drive form to US distributor, Max Hoffman in 1949 where it was immediately commissioned as a race car.

In the early 1950s, following the introduction of the LeMans-winning XK120C - or
‘C’-type, the first owner incorporated some of the C-types innovative features, such as disc brakes, three 2-inch SU carburettors, C-type racing seats and more efficient exhaust manifold. He even fitted an improved chassis for better handling which is stamped with the original serial number.

The car has been in race-prepared form for all its life and for many years was is the collection of a prominent Jaguar collector. The present owner acquired it from that gentleman’s estate some years ago and has enjoyed it on the street and at historic race meetings. The new owner may wish to continue racing the car or, since it is one of the rarest and most valuable of all production Jaguars, restore it to ‘street’ specifications.

    Estimate: $ 150,000.00 - $ 160,000.00

    Auction description:

    Lot 54

    1949 Jaguar XK120 Alloy Roadster

    CHASSIS NO. 670025

    $250,000 - $280,000

Built on November 9, 1949, this alloy-bodied XK120, 670025, was the 25th left-hand-drive example completed by the Jaguar works.

Originally finished in black with red leather upholstery, this XK120 was delivered to its first owner through US Jaguar distributor Max Hoffman in New York City and immediately put to use as a race car. It is believed that noted driver M.R.J. "Doc" Wyllie campaigned this XK in East Coast sports car races before he acquired a C-Type in1954.

Like many XK120s that raced throughout the late 1950s and 1960s, this alloy-bodied roadster was continuously updated with more advanced Jaguar components to remain competitive. Over the years 670025 benefitted from classic high- performance features, such as a 3.8-litre engine, C-Type head, larger SU carburetors, disc brakes, and lightweight C-Type bucket seats.

For many years Paul Peattie and Ali Lugo d'Armas, a well-known East Coast racer and vintage sports car collector, jointly owned this rare alloy-bodied XK120. Subsequent owner Rob Mooney continued to race the Jaguar competitively in vintage events at VIR, Lime

    Rock, and Bridgehampton.

The current owner purchased 670025 in 2007 and immediately commissioned an exhaustive nut-and-bolt restoration. With the aim of creating an ideal dual-purpose sports car, the consignor enlisted the services of two highly regarded marque specialists, Mike Wilson's Restorations in Visalia, California, and Terry's Jaguar Parts in Benton, Illinois.

Between 2007 and 2009, the Jaguar was completely restored to concours standards while integrating the finest mechanical features for improved performance and drivability. The thorough two-year restoration process has resulted in a spectacular event-eligible XK120 with a tasteful period-correct appearance and exhilarating performance.

The 3.8-litre engine - equipped with SU sandcast carburetors, reworked camshafts, and a ported and polished C-Type head - is said to produce more than 300 hp and exceptional low-end torque. An improved Borg-Warner five-speed gearbox effectively transfers power to the rear wheels while the front disc brakes and lightweight Dunlop racing wheels contribute to outstanding road manners.

Beautifully finished in the elegant color combination of Battleship Grey with brown leather upholstery, this Jaguar achieves a balance between striking and understated in appearance. In keeping with its competition-oriented character, the XK120 has been appropriately outfitted with rare C-Type-style lightweight seats, Brooklands screens, leather bonnet strap, outside fuel filler, Lucas tri-beam headlamps, and auxiliary spotlights.

In August 2009, 670025 made its post- restoration debut at the annual Carmel-by-the- Sea Concours on the Avenue where it earned Best in Class honors. During 2010, the XK120 Alloy appeared at the prestigious Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance and the Belmont Concours d'Eleganza and, as recently as 2011, it participated in the Presidio of San Francisco Concours d'Elegance.

In addition to serving as a successful and much-admired concours entrant, this Jaguar has been an excitng and reliable rally car, completing both the California Mille and the Colorado Grand without incident. Purpose built for long-distance driving events with just 2,500 miles since its complete restoration, this limited-production XK120 Alloy offers its new owner the rare opportunity to acquire a beautifully presented and event- proven Jaguar.

Offered with a correct alloy XK120 windshield, tool roll, JDHT Certificate, and a complete file of restoration and service receipts, this remarkable Jaguar is a splendid 1950s sports car and the perfect entry for the best concours, tours, and marque gatherings

    '49 Alloy Body XK120 Roadster 670025
The 35th of Only 240 Alloy-Bodied XK120s and the 25th left-hand-drive example! About 180 left-hand-drive alloys were made. Fewer than 100 total known to exist today in the Alloy XK120 models.

One of the Earliest Examples Delivered to the US. Fascinating Provenance and Competition History.Exceptional Show-Quality Restoration by Mike Wilson and Terry's Jaguar.

This XK120 Roadster is only the 25th left-hand-drive example built by Jaguar; early cars like this one were hand-built with aluminum bodies on ash wood frames. And many of them were raced out of the box, as may have been the case for this example. In 1950 Jaguar switched to mass-production using pressed-steel bodies. Early XK120s posted top speeds over 120 mph in magazine testing, and a specially prepared example reached almost 137 mph, making it the world's fastest production car. 670025 was imported through legendary importer Max Hoffman, who was the Jaguar distributor in this country.

This car has Brooklands screens, Lucas flamethrowers, and Dunlop racing wheels. The car was built on November 9th of 1949. It was originally finished in black with red leather upholstery. It is believed that noted driver M.R.J. 'Doc' Wyllie campaigned this car in East Coast sports car races before he acquired a C-Type in 1954. This car was continuously updated with more advanced Jaguar components to help keep it competitive through the years. Subsequent owners include Rob Mooney who continued to race the Jaguar in vintage events at VIR Lime Rock, and Bridgehampton. In 2011, it participated in the Presidio of San Francisco Concours d'Elegance. The car has completed both the California Mille and the Colorado Grand without incident. Since its restoration, the car has been driven just 3,000 miles. We have total documentation of the restoration from Mike Wilson's Restorations. We also have documentation of the $15,000 spent on minor items in 2013.

Though not installed, the car still retains its XK120 windshield, tool roll, JDHT Certificate, and a complete file of restoration and service receipts. The black steering wheel is also included.

Certainly it was an historic racer in much later years.
Certainly a lovely looking car but serious thought needs to be given by prospective buyers as to what they are buying

Yes a beautiful car, and thank goodness it survives in one shape or another.
If all the 'anoraks' and 'do gooders' had their way this would be scrapped.
And that would be a tragedy.
It's worth what anybody would like to pay for it.
    Happy XK motoring,

On the "no chassis, no i.d." way of thinking, then half the Land Rovers in the world wouldn't exist with their replacement chassis, not to mention MGBs with their Heritage monocoques, TR6 Heritage shells and even a lot of so called "original" Bugattis .....

    2014-05-16 08:18:02 | Roy B writes:

David, I think you are slightly missing the point here. Replacement monocoques and shells for low value cars like MGB's and TR6's are common place because it is generally considered a positive aspect of a restoration and increasing the value of the car. Having a non original chassis on a car of such rarity and prestige as an alloy xk120 is certainly not a positive thing, and will forever tarnish that cars history and value. Unlike the mgb and tr6.

To David's point Aston Martin (a somewhat valuable car?) restores their cars in house, reduction in value, don't think so. As did CMC with Phillip Porter's 9600HP, where nearly all sheet metal was replaced. And Jaguar just announced the build of a short run of low drag coupes, using original VINs, valuable, yes.

    Auction description:
    Amelia Island
    14 March 2015
    Lot 159
    1949 Jaguar XK120 Alloy Roadster
To be auctioned on Saturday, March 14, 2015
    $325,000 - $375,000

    Chassis no. 679902
    Serial no. 670025
    Body no. F 1039

Chassis 670025 was completed on November 9, 1949, and finished in black over a red leather interior. It is the 25th left-hand-drive example to have been completed by Jaguar, and of the 242 alloy-bodied cars, about 180 were produced with left-hand drive. This car was delivered to its first owner through well-known U.S. distributor Max Hoffman in New York City, and it was immediately put to use as a race car by its first owner. It is believed that during this time, the car's chassis was replaced by a later one from a 1953 Fixed Head Coupe, chassis number 679902, for improved rigidity on the track. Sometime thereafter, Paul Peattie and Ali Lugo d'Armos, well-known East Coast racers and vintage sport car collectors, jointly owned the Jaguar for many years. In April, 2000, it was acquired by Rob Mooney, who continued to race the XK120 competitively in vintage events at Lime Rock and the Louden Raceway in New Hampshire. He subsequently sold the Jaguar to noted New York architect Steven Harris in November 2007.

Between 2007 and 2009, the Alloy XK120 was afforded a thorough nut-and-bolt restoration by marque specialists at Mike Wilson's Restorations, of Visalia, California, while Terry's Jaguar Parts, of Benton, Illinois, performed the work on the Jaguar's engine. At the time, the car was painted British Racing Green, but it was refinished in correct Battleship Grey over pigskin hides. During the restoration, many of the upgraded components added over the years were restored, while other features were added to benefit performance and drivability. The result is a stunningly beautiful, event-ready XK120 with a period-correct appearance and outstanding performance.

The car is equipped with a 3.8-litre Jaguar twin-cam six and is fitted with twin SU sandcast carburetors, reworked camshafts, and a ported and polished C-Type head that is said to produce over 300 horsepower. In addition, it has been upgraded with a Borg-Warner five-speed manual transmission, front disc brakes, and classic lightweight Dunlop racing wheels. Further enhancing its sporting pedigree are correct lightweight C-Type racing seats with safety belts, Brooklands screens, leather bonnet straps, an outside fuel filler, Lucas tri-beam headlamps, and auxiliary spotlights. Its Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate is provided, along with a tool roll. Although not installed, the original XK120 windscreen and black steering wheel are included, along with a file of restoration and service receipts.

This XK120 was the winner of a Best in Class award at the 2009 Carmel-by-the-Sea Concours on the Avenue, and it was displayed at the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance and Belmont Concours d'Eleganza in 2010. The car has also participated in the 2011 Presidio of San Francisco Concours d'Elegance. In addition, it has successfully rallied in the Colorado Grand and the California Mille without incident, which is a true testament to the quality of both the restoration and preparation of this beautiful alloy-bodied Jaguar.

    300bhp? Pull the other one.

Bet it's scarcely any more than 200bhp DIN, which is more than the triple-carb straight port head engine, as in the early E-type for example.

The car has a 120FHC chassis, a later motor, probably a different gearbox, possibly a new body, probably new seats etc and apart from the original ID plate do you still have the original car 670025 ?
