The appeal of the earliest XK120 roadsters lies in their legendary and beautiful post- war design and their lightweight aluminum bodies. The alloy-bodied XKs, of which only approximately 240 were produced before steel bodies were introduced in April 1950, were constructed in a pre-war manner befitting their Bugatti-like design, with an aluminum body covering a largely wooden frame.

As the 146th car produced, this benchmark example's construction was completed on February 21, 1950, and was outfitted as a European-specification model, wearing tripod rather than sealed-beam headlights. Though records indicate this Jaguar was dispatched on April 14th to R.M. Overseas Motors in Düsseldorf, Germany, factory notes reflect that the XK120 Roadster was labeled as an "ex-works" car and a day later was hand-delivered from the factory to Colonel T. Hampton of the US Air Force. It is believed that Col. Hampton shipped his new XK120 to California, where the car apparently spent the next several decades.

In 1996, this XK120 Roadster was acquired by Tom Krefetz, owner of the restoration company Classic Showcase in Oceanside, California. Aiming to use the alloy-bodied XK120 as a showcase of the company's skill and expertise, Mr. Krefetz performed a restoration that took two years to complete. Consistent with the original style of alloy-bodied XKs, the seats were correctly upholstered in a handsome two-tone palette. Completed in 1998, Mr. Krefetz's efforts were quickly recognized with exhibition awards at several local West Coast car shows, including the JCNA San Diego Concours d'Elegance, where the car scored 100 points.

When acquired at auction in 2001 by the consignor, this car set a record price for an XK120 Alloy Roadster. The owner quickly set about an exhibition campaign of his own, but felt the car would benefit from some minor cosmetic im- provements. After re-chroming much of the bright- work, replating some engine pieces, changing the fasteners on the side curtains and installing a new soft top, the consignor emerged with a winning car that claimed no fewer than 26 awards over the following decade, starting with an AACA Senior Award at Hershey, Pennsylvania, in 2001.

Awarded Best in Class at the 2002 Greenwich Concours d'Elegance and the 2002 Meadow Brook Concours d'Elegance, this car received a Senior Grand National Award from the AACA in 2004. From 2003 to 2005, the car was a consecutive JCNA national class champion and also took a Best in Class at the 2004 Glenmoor Gathering in Canton, Ohio, and the 2007 William K. Vanderbilt Jr. Concours d'Elegance in Newport, Rhode Island. In 2008, the car won Best Sports Car at the Fairfield County Concours d'Elegance.

In addition to its numerous exhibition accolades, this exquisite XK120 Roadster has been featured in several magazines, including Classic Motorsports, British Motoring, Jaguar Journal and Jaguar World. The superb car also graced the cover of the 2007 Hemmings Sports & Exotic Car annual calendar. Furthermore, this XK120 was featured in a 2009 exhibit of post-war sports cars that ran at the AACA Museum in Hershey, Pennsylvania.

Dutifully maintained and driven only 230 miles since restoration, this example of early XK magnificence is accompanied by side curtains with a rare case, a tonneau cover, a tool kit in the correct pouch, an owner's manual and a Certificate of Authenticity from the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust. One of approximately 50 examples known to exist, this XK120 Alloy Roadster is a peerless benchmark of Coventry's most collectible model and is poised for the national competitive stage.

Really pretty car! It puzzles me why this car was sold at only $290K at the Gooding auction at Pebble Beach? Especially when the Amelia Island alloy car from Australia, which was very non-authentic, sold for $365K. By the way, how did 670146 score 100 points at a premier JCNA Concours when it had the wrong interior rear view mirror, no "EXACT REPLICA" plate on the dash, and later air cleaners on the carbs?

It was interesting peter's note no "Exact Replica" plate on dash the reason of course is that it is 7-1 compression engine: car was delivered in Europe and 7-1 cars don't have the Replica Plate ie the 20 cars delivered to Australia most didn't have plates as they were 7-1 comp cars.
My belief is most if not all alloy cars didn't have air cleaners at all?
I do not know of any Australian car sold at Amelia Island? love to know more

Thanks Terry. I didn't realize that this was a 7:1 compression engine car and that's why no "EXACT REPLICA" plate. I think you are correct, NO alloy cars were fitted with air cleaners, mine certainly was not. I just didn't state it correctly when I said the car was fitted with "later" air cleaners, it shouldn't have any air cleaners -- at least for a judged show. To my knowledge, the inside rear view mirror on an alloy car should be a short mirror, not the tall one on this car.

660017 was indeed sold at auction in october last year but by Bonhams here in Sydney Australia and it was sold to a car yard in the UK "us silly Ozzies let it go" the car that sold at Amelia Is which must have been march this year was 670005.

This stunning XK120 Roadster, chassis number 670146 is one of only 184 left-hand drive alloy cars built between 1948 and 1950. A copy of its Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate confirms its factory European left-hand-drive specification and records that the car was completed on 21 February 1950. Although the Birch Grey over Biscuit and Red duotone leather Roadster is recorded as being ordered through R.M. Overseas Motors in Düsseldorf, Germany on 14 April 1950, an additional note indicates that the “ex works” chassis 670146 was in fact collected directly from the factory by its original owner, Colonel T. Hampton of the US Air Force, the following day on 15 April 1950. The Jaguar's whereabouts over the next several decades remain undocumented, however, previously sourced documentation included with the car suggests it was brought to the United States and remained on the West Coast.

In 1996, the Roadster was acquired by Tom Krefetz of Classic Showcase in Oceanside, California. The Jaguar joined Krefetz as a highly original car showing approximately 40,000 miles, making it an excellent candidate for a frame-off restoration. Everything from the notoriously challenging fitment of its aluminum body panels to the restoration of its mechanicals including balancing and blueprinting the numbers-matching engine and rebuilding the transmission, suspension, and radiator were all overseen by marque expert Tarik Tsepina. Renewed in a wonderfully reflective coat of black paint, the aluminum coachwork was carefully reunited with the freshly media-blasted chassis and reconstructed wood frame. The interior was neatly trimmed in the finest “pigskin-grain” leather hides and the instruments, switches, and steering wheel were painstakingly restored.

Completed in 1998, the result is one of the most highly decorated alloy-bodied XK120 Roadsters extant. The exceptional quality of the restoration was immediately acclaimed by the esteemed judges at the Jaguar Clubs North America (JCNA) San Diego Concours d'Elegance, earning a perfect 100-point score for its array of correct details including red primer paint on the hood prop rod hook, wide windshield cushion pad, and attached fender lights. Its winning ways continued under new ownership when it was purchased by Paul and Jan-Gee McCollam in 2001, taking home an AACA National Senior Award at Hershey, Pennsylvania in 2001, First in Class at the 2002 Greenwich Concours d'Elegance, and three JNCA National XK120 Class 2 Championships in 2003, 2004, and 2005. With improvements made during the McCollam's stewardship, including re-chroming the brightwork, replating some engine components, and fitting a new soft top, the Roadster received an astonishing 26 awards in total over their decade of ownership.

Since entering the Academy of Art Collection in 2011, the Jaguar's museum quality, award-winning restoration has been beautifully preserved and it continues to be one of the finest documented and correctly restored alloy-bodied XK120s anywhere in the world. Complete with its side curtains, tonneau cover, jack, tool roll, and Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate, this exquisite Jaguar XK120 is available for the first time in 12 years.
