Car had the following SCM article written in '00
www.sportscarmarket.com/profiles/2000/April/English/index.html
1952 Jaguar XK 120 Roadster
* Chassis #: 672051
Finished in red with tan Connolly leather, the example pictured here has benefited from a professional frame-off restoration to concours standards. It's fully equipped, including a factory tool set and side curtains.
The SCM Analysis
This car sold for $44,000 including commission at the RM Auction in Phoenix, Arizona, January 20-21, 2000. RM Classic Cars has found a fitting architectural backdrop for its newest vintage car auction in the Frank Lloyd Wright-style Biltmore Resort and Spa in Phoenix. Unfortunately, invitations and announcements about the auction didn't circulate until less than a month before the sale. While the bidders in the audience clearly had money in their pockets, there weren't quite enough of them to make a quorum on many cars. The result was that relative bargains like this traditional Jaguar—similar to the ones driven by people like Clark Gable and, yes, Wright himself—could be found. XK 120s in this condition aren't difficult to find, but someone spent more on the restoration than this car fetched on Friday afternoon.
This "open two-seater" (or OTS, Jaguar's term for a roadster) had been recently restored and appears to be as accurate as claimed. The chrome side lights and lack of footwell vents on the front fenders, and the body-colored vinyl piping on the rear fenders place it as pre-1953, while the bolts on the domed timing chain covers place it as post-1951, all matching a chassis number that indicated the car was produced in June of 1952.
With the standard body-colored steel wheels and hub caps, and the "spats" (fender skirts) on the rear (wire wheels were optional and their knock-offs won't fit under the spats), it offered all the stunning good looks that first electrified the crowds when the XK 120 was introduced at the 1948 Earls Court Motor Show. The appropriate wide white sidewalls and bright crimson paint job against the carefully groomed green of the Biltmore's grass similarly drew the attention of the crowd at the RM reception the night before the auction.
Only a few small details detracted from its overall appeal. For example, a half-inch gap between the driver's door top pad and the matching pad on the scuttle suggested that final assembly may have been hurried to get the car to this sale. However, the panel fit was otherwise excellent and the paint was impeccable. For the medium-stature person who can fit under and behind the big black steering wheel, this should make a fine car for vintage tours as well as Jaguar meets. It will be able to keep up with the Ferraris on the road and probably outdraw them in the parking lots. At this price, the new owner will still have five grand left to make sure that all the details are properly sorted before this car faces a thousand miles of Copperstate highway or a thousand points on a JCNA judge's clipboard.—Gary Anderson, Editor, British Car Magazine

This XK120 was ordered new by now famous US importer Max Hoffman on April 30th 1952 in left hand drive. The Roadster received a total frame-off, Concours level restoration which was finished around 2000. The car has been carefully stored in climate controlled environments and sparingly driven, with only 1,420 miles registered since completion. It is finished in sporting Jaguar Red with Biscuit hued Connolly leather upholstery, matching leather-bound tan Wilton wool carpets, tan hood & side curtains, and per factory records, the car retains its numbers matching 3.4L DOHC in-line six cylinder engine. This XK120 was in a private collection in Bellevue WA since restoration from 2000 until 2015 and the car was invited to the 2008 Kirkland Concours d’Elegence, where it was displayed and judged in the special featured class, “Lipstick Red Convertibles”, the honorary category and theme that year.
In 2015 the car was sold to another WA collector whom owns the car to this day. In 2019 the 2 water filled, 6-volt batteries were replaced with a smaller single gell cell,12volt battery for better longevity and new period correct Pirelli Cinturato tires were fitted. Over the next few years the car was displayed at a few local British themed shows and then moved to Scottsdale AZ where it is currently located among other collector vehicles. In January of 2020 the car was displayed at the Arizona Jet Center party to great admiration from the crowd. The XK120 always fires right up, idles smoothly, and is an utter joy to drive, this car really is an event in itself and moves along with classic Jaguar Grace and Pace. The car is accompanied by its British Heritage Trust Certificate, fitted red satin car cover, full tool kit, spare wheel, service manual, owners manual, receipts, photographs, featured Concours program, 2 sets of keys, side curtains, soft top, sales brochure, and vintage advertisement. This car can be shown by pre-arranged appointment only in Scottsdale, AZ.

Lot #116928
This 1952 Jaguar XK120 roadster was completed on April 17, 1952 and distributed in the US via Max Hoffman of New York City. The car was repainted red during a refurbishment in the late 1990s, and it is powered by a 3.4-liter inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission. Equipment includes a tan soft top with removable side curtains, tan leather upholstery, dual SU carburetors, Smiths instrumentation, rear wheel skirts, and body-color 16” steel wheels with hubcaps. Work following the selling dealer’s acquisition in mid-2023 consisted of replacing the brake hoses, rear wheel cylinders, speedometer cable, radiator hoses, voltage regulator, and fuel level sending unit. This XK120 is now offered in Scottsdale, Arizona with a Production Record Trace certificate, a tool roll, car cover, reproduction owner’s manual, shop manual, binder of documentation, and a Washington title.
The body was finished from the factory in Pastel Green and repainted its current shade of red in the late 1990s. Details include a tan soft top with removable side curtains, rear wheel skirts, and a polished single exhaust outlet.
Body-color 16” steel wheels wear painted hubcaps and are mounted with 185-width Pirelli Cinturato tires. A matching spare is found in the rear storage area. Braking is via drums at all four corners. Work in preparation for the sale included replacement of the front brake hoses and rear wheel cylinders.
Originally trimmed in Suede Green, the cabin now houses tan leather seats with color-coordinated door panels and beige carpets.
A four-spoke steering wheel sits ahead of a central instrument panel housing Smiths instrumentation that includes a reverse-sweep 6k-rpm tachometer with an inset clock, a 140-mph speedometer, and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows approximately 1k miles, though total mileage is unknown. The fuel level sending unit, fuel gauge, and speedometer cable were replaced in preparation for the sale.
The 3.4-liter inline-six is equipped with dual SU carburetors and sends power to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission. A 12-volt battery has been installed, and work in June 2023 included repairing a coolant leak, changing the coolant and differential fluid, and replacing the radiator hoses, voltage regulator, and carburetor fuel bowl gasket. The seller notes oil leaks.
Engine block stamping W4768-8 matches the number listed on the chassis plate as well as the Production Record Trace certificate.
The Production Record Trace certificate shows the factory colors, production and dispatch dates, and identification numbers.
The Washington title bears a Classic brand.
