Car to be at auction 6/14
www.barons-auctions.com/details.php

Auction description:
Manufacturer Jaguar Cars
Model XK120 Roadster (LHD)
First Registered 1952
Registration No VVS 245
Engine No F11438
Chassis No 672388
MOT June 2015
Colour Metallic Blue

This XK120 left Coventry in the special colour of metallic blue as a special order in 1952. The Jaguar was ordered as a demonstrator for Jaguar Hornburg in Sunset Boulevard. It was subsequently sold to a famous film Star, (allegeable Clark Gable) but sadly the vendor has no history to support this. The car was re-painted in Primrose Yellow with whitewall tyres. The vendor has photographic evidence of this. We now fast forward to 1988 where Michael Erroll, ( the current owner and long time Jaguar enthusiast and Chairman of the Surrey Vintage Vehicle Society for 20 years ) found the car, in the USA, in a sate of disrepair- less engine and decided to purchase and ship it back to England for a total restoration. The motor car arrived in England on the 1st September 1989. Over a period of 3 years the XK120 underwent a total, body off chassic, restoration , the chassis was shot blasted andrepainted, fuel tank replaced, axle overhauled, together with brake pipes, callipers, etc. The body had a full bare metal repaint in it's original colour of metallic blue. The reupholstering and trimming, hood etc. was carried out by Eddie Marriott of Oxted Trimming in Surrey. A replacement XK 3.4 engine was sourced and fully re-built, the original gearbox rebuilt by a company in Bridport, Dorset. The restoration was completed around 1992/1993 and a V5 applied for.

The owner then used the XK120 on a number of European rallies and during if of these trips, the original gearbox broke. The car was shipped back to the UK where a new 5 speed gearbox was fitted. The owner continued to enjoy the car for a number of years and there is a photograph with him at the Brooklands banking, looking very proud. Sadly the owners heath began to deteriorate and he was struck down with dementia, which resulted in the car being locked away for the past 10/15 years.

Country Classic Cars are now well on the way to completing the re-commissioning of the XK120, bringing it back to it's former glory. The car will be offered in 1st class order. The vendor is changing all fluids, servicing the callipers, tuning the XK engine, fitting new 6-volt batteries, new Michelin tyres and applying for a fresh MOT, despite the fact that it is no longer required to undergo the test. The vendor states that the car willl be delivered in a 1st class running order.

The vendor states that this superb XK120 Roadster has covered 7349 miles from new. This is believed to be the genuine mileage.
Guide Price: £60000 to £70000

Every one of the 3,000 or so XK120 roadsters sold new in California was apparently owned at one time by Clark Gable.

No he brought the odd car new when he was on the east coast for holidays.
It is unfortunate the auctioneer has made such claims even the statement that it was demonstrator for Hornburg is almost certainly incorrect. So it was primrose at some point in the past - big deal
And from info above a non matching numbers car.
It would be extremely unlikely the car will have covered only 7349 miles from new given it sounds like n owner used it regularly "European rallies" "owner continued to enjoy the car for a number of years" so the indication is that it had only done say 5000 miles from new up until the car was "found the car, in the USA, in a sate of disrepair- less engine" !!!

For sale at www.classic-trader.com/fr/voitures/annonce/jaguar/xk/xk-120-ots/1952/109852

Asking price : 104 995 GBP (116 332 EUR)

Seller's description :

This superb Roadster is finished in twilight blue Jaguar metallic with two tone light and dark blue leather trim, complemented by a dark blue soft top and side screens. This XK120 is an early vehicle with the chrome outside sidelights, steel wheels, hub caps, rim embellishers and rear wheel spats. It drives like new and is in near concours condition. The car was discovered in the USA in a state of disrepair by Michael Erroll who was a long-time Jaguar enthusiast and Chairman of the Surrey Vintage Vehicle Society for 20 years (hence the private reg VVS245 which he purchased and which was sold with the car). The vehicle was repatriated back to the UK in 1989 whereupon it received a ground up restoration body off the chassis, bare metal repaint and retrim etc. This took place from 1989-1993 at a cost in excess of £42000 at that time. There is a full photographic record with the car and the car has travelled very few miles since the restoration. The history folder includes: current V5, previous MoT certificates, invoices, condition report, write up on xk120s, the photographic record, workshop manual, various write-ups etc. plus factory press release pictures. This car was sold new to the Jaguar Garage Homburg, Sunset Boulevard, LA to be their demonstration vehicle and has been purported to have been owned by the actor Clarke Gable- and it may well have been but we have no cast iron proof. That said this is a beautiful, mint example of the marque and offered at a sensible price for both the condition and the rarity.
