Car to be at auction 8/11
www.bonhams.com/usa/auction/19363/lot/452/
Auction description:
Sale 19363 - Quail Lodge Sale, 18 Aug 2011 to 19 Aug 2011
California, Carmel
Lot No: 452
Believed three owners from new
1953 Jaguar XK120 Roadster
Chassis no. 674160
Engine no. W 9314-8
An original left hand drive XK, Chassis 674160 was sold new in 1953. It is thought that the car was acquired from this original owner, by the next keeper, Steven Sigwarth who was based in Cedar Rapids, IA. When acquired, the car was in unrestored/original order and it was during his ownership that he undertook a comprehensive restoration of the XK, putting it into the fine order in which it is found today. Using local specialists Tremains Automotive and Simonson's of Taylorville, IL and Riverside Sports Cars of Swisher, IA, and with the majority of replacement or refurbished parts arriving from UK Specialists Guy Broad and XK Engineering, the project was completed over a period of 3-4 years. On file are invoices for the work being carried out totaling in excess of $60,000, with a further $18,000 on parts and trim. A facsimile handbook is also with the car. The 120 was subsequently acquired by the present owner from known Jaguar specialists 'Doc's Jags' in 2000. Since that time it has been attended to and well maintained by respected expert Kurt Braunstein in East Hampton, NY.
A benchmark catalog example of the model, it is arguably all the better for being to the original specification and still sporting the elegant disc wheels and rear wheel spats. Its restoration has barely aged and today the car presents beautifully, the color combination works well, the deep red trim contrasting with the silky silver bodywork, while on the road the Jaguar is reported to be a strong performer and very fast!
Estimate: US$70,000 - 100,000
Not sold.

While in that ownership, the Silver XK120 was attended to and maintained by respected expert Kurt Braunstein in East Hampton, NY. In 2011, it was acquired by the consignor - a well-known collector and enthusiast with taste for exquisite collector cars - who since used the classic English Roadster on spirited drives throughout the US, while maintaining it in beautiful condition. Further restoration work has been performed, including the fitment of a new convertible top and tonneau cover in 2012, and a few tasteful drivability upgrades fitted, including fitment of an electric cooling fan and choke, and a mobile phone charger under the dash. This fine example is offered with a comprehensive history file including many restoration records, a tool kit, jack, a facsimile owner's manual, original parts and service manual's, and a set of expertly made side curtains with custom stowage bag. Most recently, the Silver Jaguar was exercised on the 2017 edition of the famous 1000-mile road rally, The Copperstate 1000.
A benchmark example of the model, it is arguably all the better for being to the original specification and still sporting the elegant disc wheels and rear wheel spats. A lovely example indeed, ready to take on one the many driving events this iconic Roadster is eligible for.

Lot Number 117
Chassis No. 674160

Body No. F 6266
Documented, comprehensive restoration history
Recently participated in the 1,000-mile Copperstate rally
Excellence in Class award at 2017 Boca Raton Concours d’Elegance
Retains its original matching-numbers engine block
Includes Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate
It is believed that this 1953 XK 120 was acquired from its original owner by Steven Sigwarth of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. With the car in unrestored, original condition, Mr. Sigwarth undertook a comprehensive restoration using local specialists Tremains Automotive and Simonson’s of Taylorville, Illinois, and Riverside Sports Cars of Swisher, Iowa. A majority of replacement or refurbished parts were sourced from UK specialists Guy Broad and XK Engineering, and the restoration was carefully completed over a four-year period. At some point the original cylinder head had been replaced, though the engine block matches the factory records as confirmed per the Jaguar Heritage certificate.
Later, the roadster was acquired by its next owner from noted Jaguar specialists Doc’s Jags in 2000. During this stewardship, the XK 120 was maintained by the respected Jaguar expert Kurt Braunstein in East Hampton, New York. In 2011 it was subsequently acquired by a well-known collector and enthusiast who enjoyed the elegant Jaguar on spirited drives throughout the U.S. Additional restoration work was performed, including the installation of a new black convertible top and a matching tonneau cover in 2012. For touring comfort and convenience, the Jaguar was fitted with a few tasteful upgrades, including a new choke as well as a mobile phone charger hidden beneath the dash.
The car was prepped and ran in three 1,000-mile rallies, including the 2017 Copperstate rally as well as two rallies through New England. Presented in superb cosmetic condition, the Jaguar was exhibited at The Quail in 2017 and at the Boca Raton concours last year, where it was awarded Excellence in Class.
This fine example is accompanied with a comprehensive history file with numerous restoration records, including over $70,000 worth of invoices from work performed from 2012 to 2017. The XK 120 also includes a tool kit, jack, spare wheel, parts and service manuals, and a set of beautifully crafted side curtains with custom stowage bag.

This 1953 Jaguar XK120 roadster is finished in Birch Grey with a black soft top over a red leather interior, and its numbers-matching 3.4L inline-six is paired with a four-speed manual gearbox. A four-year refurbishment was performed in Iowa and Illinois during the 1990s, with work including refinishing the body, refreshing the interior, overhauling the braking and suspension systems, rebuilding the powertrain, and more. The convertible top and tonneau cover were replaced in the early 2010s, and approximately $70k in work was performed from 2012 to 2017, when the car ran in three 1,000-mile rallies including the 2017 Copperstate 1000. The car was exhibited at the 2016 Greenwich Concours d’Elegance, at The Quail during Monterey Car Week in 2017, as well as at the 2019 Boca Raton Concours, where it received an Excellence in Class award. In January 2020 the car was acquired by the selling dealer, who changed the fluids and performed a tune-up. This XK120 OTS is now offered in Arizona with service records and receipts since the 1990s, a tool roll, a jack, extra parts, service manuals, side curtains with a stowing bag, a Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate, miscellaneous decals, a canvas art print of the car, and a clean Arizona title.
The car was delivered to the US market in summer 1953 in Birch Grey and was refinished in the late 1990s. Features include a two-piece windshield, chrome trim, and a black soft top with matching side curtains and a tonneau cover that reportedly were sourced in 2012. Steel wheels are mounted with body-color hubcaps and chrome-finished beauty rings. Records show that the suspension and brakes have been overhauled within the past decade.
The cockpit is trimmed in red leather that extends from the seats and across the dashboard and door panels. Matching red trim and carpeting is present throughout. A charging port for a cell phone has been added under the dash along with switches for the cooling fan and the choke.
A four-spoke steering wheel fronts center-mounted Smiths instrumentation that includes a 140-mph speedometer and a reverse-sweep 6k-rpm tachometer with an integrated clock. The five-digit odometer shows 66k miles, approximately 250 of which have been added by the selling dealer. True mileage is unknown.
The 3,442cc inline-six is paired with a four-speed manual gearbox. The powertrain reportedly has been rebuilt, and following the seller’s acquisition in January 2020 service included engine and transmission oil changes as well as a tune-up at Coventry Motors in Phoenix, Arizona.
The engine-block stamping reads W9314-8, which matches the number on the JHT certificate as well as the data plate shown in the gallery below. The cylinder head has been replaced.
Records date back to the 1990s, and more than 125 individual pages are presented in the gallery below. The seller reports that approximately $70k was spent from 2012 to 2017, with work during that time frame including:
Pertronix electronic ignition installed, ignition switch replaced
Carburetors rebuilt
Engine mounts replaced
Fuel pump and fuel-pump mounts replaced
Thermostat replaced
Electric cooling fan installed
Suspension, steering components, and wheel bearings replaced
Brakes serviced
Paintwork touched up
Convertible frame powdercoated
Door panels reupholstered
Speedometer rebuilt
Clock replaced and rewired
The Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate shows a July 1953 date of manufacture, original distribution to Hoffman in New York, and the factory color scheme, as well as assigned serial numbers for the chassis, body, engine, and gearbox.
