This 1954 Jaguar XK120 is a left-hand drive roadster that was sold new in Los Angeles to the husband of television and film actress Lenore Kingston, who reportedly kept it until 1964. The car later moved to Ohio, though further history is unclear until it was purchased by the seller's father in 1992 as an abandoned project without a drivetrain. A body-off refurbishment was eventually performed and completed four years ago, including new paint in the original color, a fresh interior and top, refinishing of the frame and running gear, and installation of a replacement 3.4-liter inline-six and 4-speed manual gearbox. The car is offered on behalf of the seller's father with a BMIHT certificate, memorabilia, and a clean Ohio title in the name of the seller's father.
The refurbishment included a repaint in original Pastel Blue and was performed on and off over an 8-year period ending in fall 2014 by a restorer in Canton, Ohio, who had carried out several previous projects for the seller's father. The seller notes that the hood gaps are off as shown in the photos below. Painted knock-off wire wheels are mounted with wide-whitewall bias ply tires.
New glass was installed in the windshield frames and blue soft top. A set of unrestored original fender mirrors is included but not currently mounted. The windshield washer system is missing its jar and is described as inoperable.
Interior work consisted of fresh blue upholstery, period-style carpeting, and new wiring. A single 12-volt battery replaces the stock twin 6-volt setup behind the seats. Factory Smiths instrumentation includes a 140 mph speedometer and a reverse-sweep tachometer that was rebuilt by Nisonger Instruments in 2017.
Lights, indicators, and gauges are reported to work aside from the clock and oil pressure gauge, which is said to remain inaccurate despite several repair attempts. The odometer shows just under 90k miles, with total chassis miles unknown. Approximately 250 miles have been added since completion of the refresh in 2014. The seller notes that the floor-mounted headlight dimmer switch is an incorrect part.
A replacement 3.4-liter "S" type twin-cam six was sourced from a 1953 XK120 and overhauled along with the 4-speed manual transmission and differential. The engine is equipped with twin SU carburetors. A service in May 2018 included a new starter solenoid and turn signal flasher, as well as an oil change using high-zinc Lucas oil.
The seller notes several incorrect hoses, clamps, and fasteners underhood.
Underbody photos are provided to show condition of the frame, running gear, and stainless exhaust. The rubber bushings on the steering pin assemblies are said to have worn prematurely, and several ball joint and tie rod boots are cracked and leaking grease. The 4-wheel drum brakes are described as fair, and brake fluid leaks are pictured at the rear axle tube and front backing plates. The leaks have since been repaired according to the seller.
The British Motor Industry Heritage Certificate lists the first owner as Kingston's husband in addition to showing the original colors and drivetrain numbers. The whereabouts of the original drivetrain are unknown, while the body and chassis match between the certificate and data plate.
The car is sold with a picture, plate, and letter from Kingston's stepdaughter, as well as a California license plate from her ownership. Spares include the original Lucas starter solenoid, turn signal flasher, ignition coil, and oil pressure gauge lines. A reproduction tire pump is also supplied, though the seller notes the absence of a tool kit or grease gun. A spreadsheet itemizes a partial list of work completed during the refurbishment.
