Auction description:
Auction Date: 04 December 2010
Lot - 1954 Jaguar XK120 Fixed Head Coupé
* Registration: 864 YUA
* Chassis Number: 681325
* Engine Number: 1742/8
* Odometer reading: 26800
* Estimate: £55,000-£70,000
This stunning XK120 Fixed Head Coupé is finished in fern green coachwork with dark green leather hide and carpets. Originally supplied by United States Jaguar concessionaires Hornburg in Los Angeles, 864 YUA was declared manufactured on 1st January 1954. According to the vendor the car has enjoyed just two US based owners, a doctor and a professor before he imported the car in 2009.
864 YUA was sourced in Iowa from the second owner, who had purchased the car in 1989 to add to his enviable collection. It is worth noting that Iowa is a dry state, much like California and as such the car has remained in excellent structural condition.
An inspection of the body reveals flush door shut lines, even panel gaps and the wings are also presented in straight, original order. The interior is also original and in superb condition throughout , right down to the body number which is written in pencil on a number of trim parts and underneath the seat squabs.
The engine is the original unit fitted in the car in 1954 (engine no 1742/8) making this a matching numbers car which starts easily from cold to a smooth idle and the vendor advises us that the dynamo is a rare special equipment unit, in addition the complete original toolkit is fitted in the boot.
864 YUA has full UK V5 registration and is offered with MoT road test certificate valid to August 2011 and a Jaguar Heritage certificate. A very rare opportunity to acquire a low mileage, highly original and unmolested XK120 Fixed Head Coupe which was invited and displayed by Jaguar Heritage at the 2010 Goodwood Revival. With originality being so important in today's marketplace, this car represents an ideal investment for the prudent collector.

I see some photos showing it's previous condition have been removed . The description above implies this car as being in original unrestored condition. Previous photos, since removed, showed it requiring full restoration?.

If photos were removed it was generally because they weren't actually of this car. We, as a general rule, do not remove photos which are proven to be of the right car. I suspect there was an auction report typo.

An unrestored car quoting chassis no. 681325 was offered on eBay in October 2010 from Ohio, but presumably that was a misquoted chassis number as the car was by then actually in the UK.

Seller's description:
Actually, I would love this car straight ahead, but…. Except for the carpets, which we reproduced in great detail, the entire interior is still completely original. The paint was painted a shade lighter many years ago, but it is an original color. Originally suede green, now pastel green. But why?
The legendary Urs Schmid, already known as XK Pope in 1990, bought this car when his serious illness calmed down a bit and he treated himself to some food for the soul after which, upon his death, he had already sold most of the XKs in his extensive and highly original collection. And how original this XK 120 FHC is, for example in the engine compartment! Nothing is painted over, broken, replaced with wrong components or otherwise tinkered with. Simply fantastic. A truly large automobile, a reference car that is second to none. Due to the low mileage, it is also mechanically in good shape, of course it is used, but certainly not used up. With this car you don't just acquire some automotive history, but one of the great but less hyped and affordable icons. For William Lyons, the coupé was always the ideal body shape from an aesthetic point of view. The Austin 7 Swallow, the SS1, the SS100 Coupé, the XK 120 Coupé, the MkI / 2 Coupé, the E-Type Coupé, the XJ-S and the final fulfillment in his life as an automobile designer - the postless XJ S2 Coupe!
Not all of his ideas went into series production, but those that have been produced are all coveted and respected classics today.
What could have inspired him for the XK120 FHC (fixed head coupe)? It was probably the Bugatti 57SC Atlantic. Perhaps Lyons was also inspired by the baroque vehicles of the great bodywork forges in France, but his creations are all without the superfluous trinkets, because Lyons design language was simple and free of any unnecessary ornamentation and that's exactly how the XK 120 Coupe became.
Treat yourself to such an icon, better still this car that is a truly large automobile that is a big attraction on every occasion in its pastel color and its closed rear wheel arches.
