Car to be at auction 4/09
www.bonhams.com/cgi-bin/public.sh/pubweb/publicSite.r

Auction description:
Sale 17254 - Collectors' Motor Cars and Automobilia, 20 Apr 2009
RAF Museum, Hendon

Lot No: 332
1955 Jaguar XK140 Drophead Coupé
Coachwork by Body no. P3729
Registration no. 174 YNY
Chassis no. 807164
Engine no. G 3940-8
Estimate: £45,000 - 55,000

174 YNY is well know to the Bonhams team – having been handled by them twice in the 1990s in their ‘Brooks’ days. It is very smartly presented in maroon livery with chrome wire wheels and the snug cockpit upholstered in beige leather. The car is equipped with manual four-speed gearbox with overdrive. Prior to the present ownership the car had been owned by the 9th Earl of Chichester and during the period 1991 to 1993 was the subject of a painstaking and substantial restoration by P & K Thornton of Nottingham. A substantial file of restoration invoices and a quantity of restoration photographs record in detail the work carried out. The car has been very carefully cherished since that time and, although little used in recent years, has been regularly started and MoT tested, the last MoT expiring in December 2008. General presentation is very good indeed and this car has potential to be a front-runner on the Concours d’Élégance lawns or indeed on the more demanding competitive road events. It comes with a quantity of previous MoT certificates and a Swansea V5C registration document.

Car to return to auction 4/13, note same photos from '09 auction.
www.bonhams.com/auctions/20926/lot/326/

Auction description:
29 Apr 2013 14:00 BST Hendon, RAF Museum
Collectors' Motor Cars and Automobilia

Lot 326
1955 Jaguar XK140 Drophead Coupé
Registration no. 174 YNY
Chassis no. 807164
Engine no. G3940-8
Estimate:
£80,000 - 100,000
€94,000 - 120,000
US$ 120,000 - 150,000

One of only 479 XK140 drophead coupés made in right-hand drive configuration, '174 YNY' is well know to the Bonhams team, having been handled by us twice in the 1990s under the Brooks banner and more recently when it was sold to the current vendor at our RAF Museum, Hendon sale in April 2009 (Lot 332).

Prior to the immediately preceding ownership, the car had been owned by the 9th Earl of Chichester and during the period 1991 to 1993 was the subject of a painstaking and extensive restoration by P & K Thornton of Nottingham. Work carried out is detailed in a substantial file of restoration photographs and invoices totalling circa £40,000. The car was said to have been carefully cherished since restoration, seeing little use in the years prior to its sale in 2009, though it had been started regularly and MoT'd. Equipped with the desirable overdrive gearbox and chromed wire wheels, '174 YNY' is finished in maroon with biscuit leather interior and is described by the vendor as in generally excellent condition. Potentially a front-runner on the Concours d'Élegance lawns or indeed on competitive road events, the car is offered with the aforementioned file, purchase invoice (1989), photocopies of old MoT certificates, various SORNs and Swansea V5 document.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
