This car was once owned by the famous Jaguar author/writer, Paul Skilleter, it being his first Jaguar. The UK registration number was JTK 826. It is mentioned in a very interesting and detailed article in Jaguar World magazine Vol 9 No. 2 November/December 1996. Paul sold the car in 1968 and it eventually found its way to Ireland where it was registered as 726 YZA, owned by Derek Ryan of Dublin. Engine number was G 8699-8S.

One of only 479 XK140 drophead coupés made in right-hand drive configuration, this 'SE' version has the C-type cylinder head, dual exhaust system and overdrive transmission, and thus represents the model in its ultimate and most desirable form. Chassis number 'S807451DN' was despatched from the factory via Henlys Limited in London to Bristowes Motor Works and first owned by Major A Hickman of Dorset Clay Products, Poole. The accompanying Jaguar Heritage Certificate records the original colour scheme as Pastel Blue with matching interior and French Grey hood (the present livery is believed to date from circa 1990). Currently registered in the Republic of Ireland, the car was owned there previously by one Victor C Beckwith and also by Mrs Patricia Ryan, widow of the respected Irish enthusiast, the late Derek Ryan. The 'XK' has been in the current owner's hands since its circa 1990 restoration and has seen little use while in his collection. Finished in Old English White with red leather interior, the car is described by the vendor as in generally very good condition and offered with the aforementioned Heritage Certificate. All proceeds of the sale will be donated to the registered charity, '3Ts - Turn The Tide Of Suicide'.

As far as I can establish, the car offered by Bonhams appears unlikely to be my old pastel blue XK 140 drophead. Unless some most convincing evidence emerges to the contrary, my belief is that JTK 826 (as it was UK registered when I owned it in 1966) is owned by Stuart Ward in the UK who bought it in poor condition about four years ago.

Regarding the identity of JTK 826 (as I call it), convincing evidence has indeed emerged that the car to be offered by Bonhams at Hendon in April is the genuine article. I have obtained a detailed history of this car and spoken to previous owners. On the basis of continuous history, and the results of inspections by qualified personnel, it now appears highly unlikely that the entity owned by Stuart Ward is JTK 826.

This car has a known continuous history from October 1966 and earned a special place in Jaguar folklore when it was acquired by Paul Skilleter, author and publisher specialising in Jaguar cars. He writes:-

"JTK 826 is a very special car to me as it was my first Jaguar. I bought it for £250 in October 1966 and owned it for around two years, and saw an indicated 138mph on the spedo! During that time it became the 'founder car' of the XK Register".

The car passed in 1968 to specialist car dealer Cecil Bendall of Hitchin who sold JTK 826 to G R Hazel of Weston, near Hitchin, a somewhat reclusive character who used the car very little. Jaguar enthusiast Vic Beckwith subsequently bought the car from Hazel and carried out a high quality refurbishment of interior and exterior. Beckwith sold the car to respected Irish enthusiast, the late Derek Ryan of Dublin, who registered the car in Ireland 726 YZA. While in Ryan's ownership this car was fire damaged, passing then through the hands of two 'establishment' figures in the Irish old car world before acquisition by the present owner some twenty or more years ago. A careful restoration was embarked upon circa 1990, since when this car has seen little use while in the owner's collection.
