    Model XK140 Roadster
    ESTIMATE €100,000-€130,000

This is an extra special Jaguar XK140, not least because it is very well known amongst the European historic rallying fraternity. Over the last 25 years it has played a major role in classic rallies, including the Württemberg Classic where it has participated for 16 consecutive years. While it is said to be extremely reliable and well proven on long distance outings, the car is also extremely quick as it's fitted with a C-Type cylinder head, special exhaust manifolds and overdrive. The car's condition is modestly described by the current owner as "good in all respects", and with beautiful red paint with black leather interior it is offered for sale with some rallying modifications such as a louvered bonnet and a quick-filler cap. This XK comes with German road papers and is ready to go.

    Auction description:

    Lot 154 - 1955 Jaguar XK140 Roadster ‘Fast Road’

    Registration 726 UYS Chassis Number 810906 Engine Number G2470-8 Odometer reading 7,700 miles Estimate £65,000 - £75,000

Built on the 3rd February 1955, it was promptly despatched on the 18th February to world famous US importer, Max Hoffman in New York. History relates that it was then acquired by Andreas Markus of Fellbach, Germany followed by the now previous owner, Jurgen Bremmer & Thomas Schaefer who extensively rebuilt and rallied the car. With racing very much in its DNA and significant rallying in its recent past, it was a perfect choice for the current owner. Registered and purchased in 2016 with all duties paid, it was also inspected by the DVLA with numbers cross referenced and certified by both the DVLA and the JDHT. Since then, it has been regularly used and improved by the vendor since purchase including outings at Shelsley Walsh, the Round Britain Coastal Drive with XK Club, numerous race meetings at Goodwood & Brooklands and the Laon Historic Rally in 2019.

According to the vendor, it carries a tuned, matching numbers engine, body & chassis with a bespoke six-branch stainless steel manifold and exhaust system. A five-speed, full-synchro gearbox, front disc brakes with servos and the brakes recently relined with new shoes. A high-torque starter motor, electronic ignition and electric fan can also be found alongside fully adjustable shock absorbers, alternator charging (negative earth conversion) and the battery, with isolator, moved to boot for easy access. It sits purposefully on 72 spoke chromium-plated wire wheels. Up top is a Monza fuel filler cap to the rear, a works-style louvred bonnet with leather safety-strap, competition fogs lamps and Luke 4-point harnesses fitted to the cockpit. It is, as you would expect, fully serviced and carries a current MoT test certificate including a recent oil & filter change. It has been well restored and has proved extremely reliable with sensible driver upgrades. It is now ready for the next grand motoring adventure...

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
