Seen on eBay. Reserve not met, high bid $5000.

Ad reads:

I bought this car in 1968 and drove it occasionally until 1972. Since then, it has sat in storage and has not been started. When I first got the car, I replaced the front suspension ball joints and replaced the convertible top, including the wooden bows. I stopped driving it because it needed a new exhaust but it otherwise ran well at that time. It is very complete and original and would make a good project car. Chassis # 818221, Engine # G6345/8. The speedometer was not working when I bought the car so I do not know the actual mileage - the 50,000 miles noted above is a guess and the odometer now reads 40,000. I have many miscellaneous parts, including a spare gearbox and a new exhaust system. The car is located in central NH, about two and one half hours north of Boston, MA. The car has the standard 3.4 liter 6-cylinder XK engine (190 HP) w/ twin SU carbs, 4 speed manual gearbox, steel wheels, roll-up windows, and two "squab" seats behind the driver and passenger seats. Inspection can be arranged.

Car is now listed on jagads.com with following ad text:

56 XK 140 Convertible drophead coupe. The most desirable of all xks. The car has the 3.4 liter 6-cylinder XK engine (190 HP) w/ twin SU carbs, 4 speed manual gearbox, steel wheels, roll-up windows, wood on the dash and tops of doors, and two small seats behind the front seats. Former owner bought this car in 1968 and drove it occasionally until 1972. Since then, it has sat in storage and has not been started. When he first got the car, he replaced the front suspension ball joints and replaced the convertible top, including the wooden bows. He stopped driving it because it needed a new exhaust but it otherwise ran well at that time. It is very complete and original. Chassis # 818221, Engine # G6345-8. Many miscellaneous parts, including a spare gearbox and a new exhaust system. The xk 140 has an aluminium hood, trunk lid, and doors. The A and B posts where the doors open and shut on the body at the front and rear of the doors are all solid on both sides of the car. The inner sills on both sides are solid as well. $28,500. Atlanta, Georgia

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
