Auction description:
Ascot Racecourse
September 26th 2020

Lot 209 - 1960 Jaguar XK150 Fixedhead Coupé (3.4 Litre)
Lot Number 209
Registration 4517 W
Chassis Number 5825219DN
Engine Number V.75138
Odometer reading 91,875 miles
Estimate £45,000 - £56,000

Original UK supplied righthand drive example
Matching numbers
Manual with overdrive

Presented in Old English White with red leather interior, this lovely righthand drive XK150 fixedhead coupé was supplied new on 12th May 1960 to C. Metcalfe Ltd in Sheffield before swiftly being sold to a Mr Badley later that very month. We are informed this desirable 3.4 litre manual with overdrive example is fully matching numbers and purchased by our vendor as part of a significant private collection in 2010 therefore it has benefitted from continual maintenance and when not in use stored inside in a professional ventilated Carcoon. Offered with a lovely history file including a comprehensively stamped original buff logbook and collection of MoT’s dating back to 2009 showing continual use and invoices for servicing and maintenance all the way back to 1969 in what is a very good level of provenance.

The condition of the car can be described as very good indeed, the paintwork and chrome show little signs of age, the interior is in good condition as are the wire wheels. A car that would represent a great investment whilst giving a collector or enthusiast many years of enjoyment therefore viewing is recommended.

Imperial War Museum, Duxford

Lot 91

1960 Jaguar XK150 SE 3.4 Litre FHC

Estimate £50,000 - £60,000

Registration No: 4517 W

Chassis No: S825219DN

MOT: Exempt

A home market, 'matching numbers' example with service / maintenance history dating back to 1969

Supplied new to C. Metcalfe Ltd of Sheffield and later part of a significant private collection

Finished in Old English White with Red leather upholstery

Desirable specification includes four-speed manual plus overdrive transmission, disc brakes and wire wheels

According to its accompanying buff logbook, this particular example was originally finished in White and first registered as ‘4517 W’ to supplying dealer C. Metcalfe Ltd of Sheffield on May 12th, 1960. A desirable ‘Special Equipment’, manual/overdrive model, the Jaguar had migrated to Southend-on-Sea, Essex (via Scotland, Solihull and Cheltenham) by the decade’s end. The earliest bills on file were issued to A. Wiles Esq and date from 1969. Still resident in Essex when D. Davis Esq commissioned marque specialist Flying Cat Engineering to undertake a thorough restoration during late 2002, the XK150 was treated to a bare metal respray (plus associated chassis / floor repairs), rejuvenated brightwork, re-trim, brake overhaul, new fuel tank and replacement exhaust etc. Returning to the road in 2007, the 2+2-seater is said to have become part of a significant, Hertfordshire-based, private collection five years later. Still highly presentable, ‘4517 W’ has seen modest usage since its renovation was completed. Believed but not warranted to have covered some 92,000 miles from new (but only 14,000 of those since 1969), the Jaguar pleasingly retains its original factory-installed engine (V7513-8). Offered for sale with V5C Registration Document and history file, this appealing ‘home market, matching numbers’ XK150 is worthy of close inspection.

Seller's description:

1960 Jaguar XK150 SE FHC

Home market, right hand drive Jaguar XKs do not often come with a better provenance than this one. 4517 W was originally a northern car hailing from the ‘steel city’ of Sheffield. The Jaguar Heritage Certificate in the history file confirms that it remains in the original factory body colour and trim. First registered on May 24th 1960, the XK150 was sold to John H Mason Limited, silversmiths and electroplaters of Sidney Steet Sheffield, a company founded in 1918. Mr. Leslie T Bradley became Managing Director of Mason’s business in 1947 and eventually took a controlling interest in the company. It is Mr Bradley’s signature on the original buff logbook from May 1960. The car was bought just 2 years after he registered a patent concerning knives, forks and spoons. Sheffield was then renowned globally as a city where the world’s finest cutlery was produced, and this sporting Jaguar coupe was a fitting car for the MD of a prominent Sheffield firm.

After three years the XK headed north to new owners in Scotland where it remained until 1968. By 1969 the car had new owners in Essex. There are several invoices from a Jaguar specialist in Westcliffe-on-Sea and an invoice for an engine rebuild at 85,852 miles in July of 1975. Little is known from then until the car was restored, starting with a bare metal re-spray and associated bodywork in 2002. The brightwork was re-chromed and the majority of the interior retrimmed, the work being carried out by Flying Cat Engineering. The car has spent much of its recent life in storage and indeed only seven hundred miles have been driven in the past 14 years. The current recorded mileage of 92270 is believed to be correct from new and matches the very revealing patina of the leather trimmed dashboard. The last owner has purchased a full kit to re-leather the dash but we rather like the authentic look of the original. Carpets, seat leather, door cards and headlining were all renewed during restoration, but more than 20 years on there is evidence of a small amount of headlining moth damage, particularly behind the sun visors, where it is not obtrusive. However, we have our own trim shop should the new owner wish to replace it.

The XK has an excellent high gloss paint finish with super brightwork and indeed the chrome wire wheels look like new. On the road, the car is very lively and runs without fault – even the originally auxiliary starting carburettor works, cutting out automatically as it should. Oil pressure is excellent, the gears are quiet, and the overdrive works smoothly. Last year, the front brake discs, pads and hydraulic cylinders were replaced, along with brake master cylinder, fuel pump, and screen washer pump. The recommissioning work included replacement of the distributor cap, HT leads, spark plugs, ignition points and condenser. The steering rack mountings were also replaced, and the wheel alignment checked. The car comes with its own battery conditioner and wiring connector. The valuable original single letter registration number is with the car, and we are confident that this lovely XK represents extremely good value for money at £57,995.
