This 1955 Jaguar XK140 is an SE roadster, which was imported by Hoffman Motor Company and reportedly purchased new by the seller’s grandfather in 1955. The grandfather had the car in South Carolina and in 1974 gave it to the seller’s father, who registered the Jaguar in Massachusetts and transferred ownership to the seller in 2009. Finished in Maroon over a Biscuit leather interior, the car is powered by a 3.4-liter inline-six linked to a four-speed manual gearbox with overdrive. Specifications for SE (Special Equipment) XKs included driving lamps, dual exhaust, and wire wheels. The car has remained in the seller’s family for the past six decades, and between 2007 and 2009 it was mechanically recommissioned by Spencer Restorations in Canterbury, Connecticut. This XK140 SE OTS is now offered with a Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate, records from the refurbishment, a convertible top and side curtains, spare tire and jack, and a clean Massachusetts title in the seller’s name.
The Maroon finish shows rock chips and flaking as well as sections that have been polished thin. A ding is present on the driver-side rear fender.
New Vredestein Sprint Classic tires and tubes were installed on the white-painted wire wheels, including the spare, in 2008. All six of the wheel cylinders have been replaced along with the master cylinder, shoes, and hoses. The convertible-top frame remains stowed behind the seats and wears an older Sand beige cover. Matching side curtains also are present.
The cabin is trimmed in Biscuit leather over red carpeting. Smiths gauges are housed in a leather-wrapped dash. The fuel-level gauge operates sporadically. The five-digit odometer shows nearly 71k miles, approximately 550 of which have been added since the recommissioning was completed in 2009.
In SE trim, the 3.4-liter DOHC inline-six was rated for 190 horsepower and featured dual exhaust. The engine—including the cooling, induction, ignition, and electrical systems—was addressed during the 2007–2009 service at Spencer Restorations in Canterbury, Connecticut. Work included a new head gasket, valve adjustment, reconditioned radiator, new hoses, rebuilt carburetors, and more. Follow-up work at Spencer Restorations in 2014 involved the ignition, cooling, and fuel systems.
Stamping G1773-8 is shown on the cylinder head and matches the data plate and the Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate.
The four-speed manual gearbox is equipped with factory overdrive. Holes are visible in the exhaust system.
A matching spare tire, factory jack, and grease gun reside below the trunk compartment.
The Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate lists a manufacture date of December 23, 1954 and shows that the car remains in the original configuration of Maroon over Biscuit with a Sand top. Expired registration documents from the 1980s and a bill of sale from the ownership transfer to the seller indicate that the car was registered under its engine number rather than its chassis number.
