MOT ExpiryDate: Oct 2013

One of 3,282 XK140 Roadsters built to left-hand drive specification, chassis A812238 dates from 1956. A desirable Special Equipment model, it was repatriated and UK road registered as `ESJ 423' on August 29th 1997. Professionally converted to right-hand drive and rewired by marque specialist The Carriage Company the following year, the two-seater has been in the current ownership since August 1999. Understood to have covered some 3,200 miles over the intervening fourteen years, sundry invoices on file show that the same period has seen the Jaguar benefit from attention to its water pump, coil, air cleaner assembly, spare wheel tray, heater, rev counter / speedometer / dual gauge and cam cover gaskets plus the fitment of reconditioned twin SU carburettors. Pleasingly displaying the same numbers to its body plaque and engine cylinder head that appear on its bulkhead-mounted chassis plate, the XK140 Roadster presents as an older partial restoration. Finished in White with Tan leather upholstery and chrome wire wheels, `ESJ 423' is offered for sale with a tool kit, assorted The Carriage Company paperwork, numerous S.N.G. Barratt invoices and fourteen MOT certificates the latest of which was issued without advisories and expires on October 24th 2013.

Auction description:

29th Nov, 2022 November 2022 Classics Auction

Lot 35

1956 Jaguar XK140 SE Roadster

A matching-numbers, restored 'Special Equipment' roadster.

Registration - ESJ 423

Chassis No. - A812238

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - TBC

This matching numbers, Special Equipment roadster is a sight to savour. Originally a white lefthand drive export model it was repatriated and UK registered in 1997, and then acquired by the vendor 16 years later. While in his care it has been treated to a bare metal renovation during which any welding required was carried out, the Jaguar repainted in the current red livery, and the hood and carpets renewed. Uprates include the replacement of front brake drums with discs and the dynamo with an alternator. The vendor now classes the paintwork as ‘excellent’, and the XK engine, four-speed manual gearbox, bodywork and black leather interior as ‘good-to-excellent’. He is now offering the car complete with woodrim steering wheel, chrome wire road wheels, leather bonnet strap, auxiliary driving lights, badge bar, a range of spare parts, Heritage Certificate and a modest history file. He adds that the Jaguar was regularly MOT’d until recently, since when ill health has prevented him from taking to the road. In summary he describes ‘ESJ 423’ as ‘pampered and gorgeous’ and ‘a pleasure to drive’.

In summary:

• A very smartly presented Special Equipment example

• The subject of a bare metal renovation

• Comes complete with a number of extras and upgrades

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
