Ebay item 12/3/10
cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Jaguar-1956-Jaguar-3-4-Litre-XK140-5-Speed-SE-Fixed-Head ...
Opening bid $1,000 reserve not met no bids yet 9 days left in auction. Buy it now price $69,500.

Sellers description:
1956 Jaguar 3.4 Litre XK140 SE Fixed Head Coupe 5 Speed. The car is finished in the very attractive original Carmen Red. It has had over $30,000 spent on mechanical work to insure it is a fun and reliable driver. The work included full cylinder head remachining, ARP stud kit, full lower end reseal, including the install of custom rear crank seal, rebuild crank damper and alloy flywheel fitted. To improve the driving experience the car has been converted from the Borg Warner automatic to a new JT5 manual 5-Speed transmission complete with overdrive 5th gear and a alloy flywheel.

Body and Paint:
Chrome is in good condition. The body is free of any major accident damage and has never been exposed to rust as it lived most its life in California. The paint is older and is smooth and shiny, but not a concours finish. Some minor chips and cracks are present but are not immediately apparent without close examination. The car is finished in the very attractive Carmine Red color which it left the factory with and amplifies the elegant lines of the car. Door fit is as typical with these cars and a firm push is needed to fully latch. Chassis is very straight, damage, corrosion, and rust free. All suspension components have been rebushed or rebuilt. To additionally improve the handling without making it harsh, the original shocks were replaced with a full set of Koni Classics front and rear.

Mechanical:
Exceptional mechanicals. The initial rebuild was done on a low miles California car. After driving its first California Mille, the car was fully sorted and updated to make it dependable and able to cover long distances. The original matching number 3.4 liter engine underwent a tear down and rebuild with special attention paid to the original cylinder head. This head underwent a total rebuild with extra machine work performed. This allows the proper location of tappet sleeves, and full updates of valves and seats to allow running on unleaded. An updated rear engine seal was fitted and ARP hardware was employed. To insure reliability the cooling system was rebuilt and a special custom fan shroud was fabricated which allows the car to be driven in hot weather with no heating issues. An alloy flywheel was installed with a new 10 inch clutch assembly when the new custom 5-speed manual overdrive transmission was fitted. A more reliable gear reduction starter was installed at that time to insure quick starts with minimal battery draw.

Brakes were rebuilt where needed and a new master cylinder has been installed. This car stops quick and true.

Steering and suspension components were all rebuilt and the suspension and steering are excellent.

Tires and Wheels:
Car is fitted with excellent and proper 16 inch chrome wire wheels. Tires are 185×16 Firestone and retain 90-95% of their tread. They all run true and straight. Very good at higher speed.

Interior:
The car has a newer leather interior and Wilton wool carpets that are attractive and nicely fitted. The special burled walnut wood trim is complete and in good condition with some minor age related issues. The headliner is clear and proper material. Glass is all good.

Driving Impressions:
This vintage Jaguar starts and runs smoothly and quietly. It has an easy to operate clutch and the 5-speed is very quiet while making it easy to cruise at low rpm and high speed. When seated in the car you have the feel of being transported to another time of luxury and power. The 3.4 liter engine has lots of torque and is very smooth off the line and at higher revs. This car is very nice to drive on back roads and highways alike. It always has the proper gear and more than enough power. The suspension is very predictable and allows for spirited driving. It is easy enough to drive even for your spouse. Has been set up to be an event car and is rare and unique in appearance. Any XK Jaguar is very expensive to restore. You would get the full benefit of this owner having invested more than $32,000 in upgrades in the last 4-5 years if you purchase this one to drive and enjoy now.

The Jaguar Daimler Heritage reports shows The car is a Jaguar XK140 FHC Special Equipment Model. Vin # A815440BW. Engine # G7313-8 built 3/19/1956. Dispatched to Charles Hornburg 3/30/56. Only 2504 LHD were made and only 539 were SE models.

1956 Jaguar XK140 SE Fixed Head Coupe

The Quail Auction

Carmel, Quail Lodge & Golf Club

Chassis no. A815440BW

Engine no. G7313-8 (see text)

Lot to be sold without reserve

US$40,000 - US$60,000

Completed at Jaguar's Coventry works in the March of 1956, this wonderful Jaguar XK140 Drophead Coupe was fitted from new with the rare Borg-Warner automatic transmission option. Very few Jaguars of the period received this convenient addition, making this stunning example a member of quite a rare breed. Painted Carmen Red over Black leather, it was supplied new to the West Coast by Hornburg in Los Angeles. Although the early history remains unknown, the XK140 is believed to have been delivered new to the United States.

Making its way up to Eugene, Oregon, the Jaguar was extensively refurbished in the mid-2000s. The original engine appears to have been replaced with later block that was hastily restamped with the original engine number and a later head from an XJ6. The original Borg Warner automatic has been replaced with a JT5 5-speed manual, adding two extra cog and making for a more spirited driving experience. Receipts on file document the work completed, mostly by Sports Car Shop, Inc in Eugene, Oregon. Later crossing the country to Maryland, the current owner acquired the car in 2011.

Finished in maroon over dark tan leather and tan carpets, the Jag has been on static display for the last dozen years and will require mechanical recommissioning prior to active use.
