Originally an export model built for the American market as per the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate supplied with the car, this lovely XK140 left the Brown’s Lane factory on July 3, 1956 in Arbour Green with black upholstery. The ‘A’ prefix in the chassis number denotes an original Special Equipment model with the standard cylinder head and the ‘BW’ confirms it was originally specified with Borg-Warner automatic transmission. The current Sydney owner, a VSCC club member and long-time car enthusiast, sourced the XK140 as a project from California 25 years ago and painstakingly transformed the car from a relatively sound but tired example to the wonderfully presented Jaguar we offer here. Stripped back to a bare chassis and exhaustively restored from the ground up over a twelve-year period, with extensive photo documentation available, the XK has been sensitively upgraded with XK150 front hubs and disc brakes to accommodate Dayton 72-spoke wire wheels, an electric fan and too many other features to list. A 3.4-litre XK150 motor was built by Rob Rowe Automotive to ‘S’ configuration (albeit with twin SU 2-inch HD8 carburettors to fit under the 140’s bonnet) featuring a straight port head with new valves, springs and guides, new pistons and XJ6 rods and the crank re-ground. A mild Waggott cam was fitted and the motor tuned by Frank Kleinig. A close-ratio four-speed overdrive gearbox from an XK150S, overhauled by specialists Needham in Victoria, has been installed, along with an E-type diaphram-type clutch balanced with the flywheel and engine. The body was removed from the chassis and sand blasted and all panels refurbished as necessary (the bonnet replaced as the original was damaged), a new rear floor section and new petrol tank fitted. The chassis was then painted, the suspension re-bushed, new Koni shocks and an anti-sway bar fitted and the car painted in the current Indigo Blue, with all body/paint done by Gil Skidmore at Sydney Vintage Car Restorations. Converted to right-hand drive with a new driver’s side bulkhead, the steering box was overhauled. A new wiring loom was installed, the radiator rebuilt and the exhaust manifold ceramic coated, while the generator, heater and starter motor were all overhauled by specialist Bob Winley at Amaroo. The interior was fully retrimmed in grey leather with Triumph TR2 seats and lap sash belts, while Olympic Instruments rebuilt the gauges. It’s worth noting the aforementioned modifications have been fully engineered in NSW. A familiar sight at various club events around Sydney over the years, the XK140 has been set-up for fast touring and is now a very well-sorted car, ready for the new owner to climb aboard and enjoy. Previously on full NSW registration and currently wearing non-transferable historic plates (therefore sold unregistered), the XK140 will be supplied with a spare set of keys, an original owner’s manual, some XK Jaguar literature and a detailed history file.
