Car to be at auction Nov. 2011
www.silverstoneauctions.com/1950-jaguar-xk120-fixedhead-coupe
Auction description:
Registration: 896 XUU
Chassis Number: S680291
Engine Number: W6522-8S
Year of Manufacture: 1952
Sold for (£): 81,400.00
This car, which left the factory with black coachwork and a red interior was originally exported to California for many years. The second owner decided to paint the car red, the colour which has remained with the car the rest of it's life.
After a reputed long negotiation, the car migrated to Germany where upon it was completely dismantled and treated to a bare metal repaint and mechanical overhaul covering only about 3,000 miles since. Being fitted with and all-synchro five-speed gear box and lightened flywheel, the engine also acquired a 'C-Type' head with unleaded valve seats. The result, a well-rounded and user friendly 1950's sports car which is capable and confident in modern traffic over long distances if required.
The rest of the car was reassembled as original and although the seats currently in the car are not the factory supplied backs, the originals have been re-trimmed and are offered with this Lot awaiting fitment.
In our opinion, detailing the interior woodwork and door fittings would improve the car, but that is a matter of personal taste and detracts nothing from the fabulously involving drive and the view from the cockpit over the XK's fabulously shaped bonnet.
Currently offered in lefthand drive guise, depending where the lucky buyer intends to keep the car, it may be a consideration to undertake improvement to the woodwork when or if the car is converted to righthand drive. The purists amongst us may say this is sacrilege, but we believe cars like this should be used and if that amendment makes the new owner more comfortable, so be it.
Offered for sale from a private collection Without Reserve, the enthusiastic owner is keen to see the car enjoyed as it should be!

*One of the most timeless and beautiful Jaguar models ever produced
This XK120 Fixed Head Coupe was completed at the Jaguar Works November 4, 1952 as a factory left hand drive example, and dispatched nine days later to US West Coast Jaguar distributor Charles Hornburg, Jr. in Los Angeles, California. Originally finished Black over Red hides, the elegant and sporty Jaguar is listed on its Heritage Certificate as having been delivered new with the SE package.
Reported to have spent the first part of its life in California, the car was painted red by its second owner. Eventually making its way to Germany, it is understood to have been dismantled and treated to a bare metal respray in red and mechanical overhaul. To improve drivability, a fully synchro meshed 5-speed manual transmission and lightweight flywheel were also fitted, along with a pair of more comfortable seats. No documentation regarding the work completed accompanies the lot.
Acquired by the current owner in November 2011, a reported 3,000 miles had been covered on the rebuilt drivetrain at the time of purchase. On static display since joining the present collection, recommissioning is recommended prior to touring. Accompanied by a set of fitted suitcases in red to match the car, its Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate on file that confirms the car retains its original engine block and C-Type cylinder head, this powerful XK120 Fixed Head Coupe would be a great entry to any number of historic rallies, or simply parked where one can enjoy the breathtaking beauty of the XK Fixed Head Coupe design.
