Car was at auction in '04

Auction description:
Vintage Motor Cars at Meadow Brook
Saturday, July 31, 2004 [Print]
1953 Jaguar XK 120 Fixed Head Coupe

ESTIMATE: $45,000 - $55,000
CHASSIS NO: S-680557

Less than 25,000 Miles From New
180hp, 3,442 cc inline six-cylinder dual overhead camshaft engine, four-speed manual transmission and four-wheel drum brakes. Wheelbase: 102"

RM Auctions is delighted to present this unique XK 120 Fixed Head Coupe on behalf of its long time owners. Records indicate that this particular Jaguar was originally delivered to Judge Jonathan Richards of Red Oak, Iowa and several years later it was then purchased by Mark Stevens of Nebraska. After passing through the ownership of several very caring, private individuals, the car was then purchased by its current owners who have cared for the Jaguar for approximately 15 years.

We understand that the odometer shows less than 25,000 miles, which the vendor reports to be correct and authentic from new – an average of less than 429 a year. Accordingly, the pastel green car is a virtual time warp example still displaying its unique original paint. We understand the XK is even complete with the original Dunlop spare tire. The current owners did have to replace the interior leather and did so by correctly matching red leather and carpeting to the original. Overall, the car is stunning and it is a compliment to its longtime current owner who even went to the lengths of storing the car in a climate controlled garage at all times.

This beautiful Jaguar has been highly sought after and rewarded. In 1990 the car was invited to the Meadow Brook Concours d’Elegance and then again in 1995 it returned taking a Best in Class award. Additionally, the Jaguar scored a first place finish in regional JCNA competition and then later that year it was awarded a seventh place finish in National judging. Truly, this 1953 Jaguar XK 120 Fixed Head Coupe is a remarkable example that will continue to bring its next owners as much pleasure as it has done for its current owners. Its condition is nearly irreplaceable and marks a rare opportunity to purchase a very special car that could never be duplicated.

I just purchased this XK120 on January of 2012 from its current Indiana owner. He did purchase it at the RM auction in 2004. Car now sports beautiful new body and wheel paint in its original color. Overall presention remains excellent. Car has been mechanically sorted so she now drives excellent with no issues. Interior is still very good. Engine bay and underbody are still original as it left the factory.

The gearbox number does not seem right for this chassis number and such an original car ??

Corrected gearbox serial number.

I did not read the numbers correctly on the data plate on my original posting. Verified number on the Heritage Certificate and the gearbox itself.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
