Car to be at RM auction 1/10
www.rmauctions.com/FeatureCars.cfm
Auction description:
Chassis No. S811264
Estimate: $70,000-$100,000 US
To be auctioned on Thursday, January 21, 2010
OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE
The Jaguar offered here was acquired by the previous owner in February 1991, at which time it was placed in climate-controlled storage to await restoration. A subsequent no-expense-spared restoration was commissioned from Rick Kriss‘s restoration facility (formerly Irwin Restorations). Kriss and his talented staff have been responsible for many notable restorations, including the ex-shah of Iran Type 56C Van Vooren Bugatti. No expense was spared and no detail overlooked, and the completed cost was in excess of $100,000. Following its completion, the car was housed exclusively in a climate-controlled showroom and has since joined another respected private collection.
The matching numbers Jaguar was an excellent candidate for restoration as it was a black plate California car and an extremely straight, rust-free example in good mechanical order without prior accident damage or evidence of body repair. The body was removed from the chassis, the drive train was removed and all components of each major unit were completely disassembled and inspected and cataloged prior to being stripped and prepared for restoration to original (or better) specifications.
All mechanical or chassis parts not refurbished to new specification, including hoses, seals, washer and fasteners were replaced with NOS and genuine Jaguar certified factory replacement items. All new electrical components were installed, including a new wiring harness in its entirety. Switches and all ignition system components were restored or replaced as needed. Lighting equipment and instruments were restored to perfection. New Lucas tripod headlights were installed, whereas all other lighting equipment was refurbished to new specs with retention of the original lenses, which are in as-new condition. Five new chrome wire wheels shod with period correct wide whitewall tires were installed.
The dual exhaust system was replaced with stainless steel components – one of the few concessions made to modern engineering and material. Approximately 90 percent of all original fasteners, still in perfect condition, were retained and reused after oxide coating, chrome, cadmium or nickel plating, as originally specified.
The engine, which had been in excellent condition prior to restoration, was completely disassembled, remanufactured and “blueprinted” prior to final dynamometer testing. It was refinished and detailed (with polishing of all alloy surfaces) prior to reassembly, as were all other underhood components. For the remaining mechanical and chassis components, external hoses and wires are NOS or original new manufacture Jaguar replacement parts. Upon inspection of the engine, the cylinder bores revealed virtually no wear. After refinishing of the bore surfaces, a new matched set of pistons, wrist pins and rings were installed along with the connecting rods, which were matched for weight, align-bored and peaned for additional durability and strength. The crankshaft and camshafts were refinished and polished, and the entire crank assembly was balanced. All new bearings were installed. The valves, valve guides and valve springs were replaced along with the cam chains. The band was ported and polished and the exhaust manifold was porcelain coated in the correct Jaguar color. A new water pump, oil pump, fuel pump and radiator were installed. The carburetors were sent out to the premier SU specialist in the US for rebuilding, and all linkages were restored to new.
Nothing but the highest quality refinishing materials were employed, such as epoxy primers and urethane finishes. Virtually no filler was required in the restoration of this originally very straight body. The black exterior and matching Stayfast fabric top are beautifully complemented by the Cinnamon red interior with Connolly leather and Wilton carpets. This is undoubtedly one of the finest XK 140MCs in North America.
