Car now at:

Auction description:

Factory Hot Rod 1956 Jaguar XK140 MC Open Two-Seater

VIN 34148

Odometer 4,915

Engine 3,442cc DOHC straight-six

Transmission Four-speed manual

Exterior Color Cream

Seller Private

Auction type Reserve

Little is stated about its history, but this OTS is said to be the subject of previous restoration work, in excellent condition, and a holding of two Florida collectors who are looking to pare down their vintage fleet. This example was part of Jaguar’s total output of a mere 3,347 XK140 OTS examples during the model’s lifespan, which ran from 1954 through 1957.

Jaguar’s 3.4-liter DOHC straight-six, displacing the equivalent of 210 cubic inches powered the XK140. The MC package saw this engine fitted with the aluminum cylinder head from the Le Mans-conquering C-type, which brought the compression ratio to 8.0:1. Receiving its fuel mixture through dual SU sidedraft carburetors, the MC engine was rated by the manufacturer at 210 horsepower. The seller makes no statement about the engine’s originality or rebuild history, but says the engine idles well and adds that the exhaust system has been replaced. The four-speed manual transmission is said to shift smoothly, and the seller reports the degree of powertrain leakage typical for a British car of this vintage. The engine bay appears stock and all but spotless.

The age of the paint on this OTS is not specified, but the seller describes it and being in “very good” condition, with small body blemishes on the hood and left-side quarter panel. The car is said to be presently free of rust, but the seller does not know whether rust repairs have been performed in the past. The grille and badging are intact, and the chrome looks to be in excellent condition, with only minor indications of buff marks. The folding top is reported to operate properly and be leak-free. No issues are noted with the glass, and the exterior lighting is said to be functional. The body seals are said to show no signs of cracking or chunking. The underside of the OTS looks to be virtually spotless.

The age of the seat facings and interior panels are not specified, but they look to be in excellent condition, with no indication of tearing or excess wear. The carpet is said to be in very good condition. This OTS has a padded dash with a plaque honoring a Jaguar record run in Belgium. It mounts Smiths gauges, including a clock, which are believed to be properly functional. There is no audio system or heat. The trunk has a vinyl mat and presents cleanly.

The shock absorbers were replaced prior to the seller’s ownership of the car, and any suspension service beyond that is unknown. The seller reports no chassis issues. The wire knockoff wheels look to be in excellent condition, and mount Dunlop radials of unknown age that are said to have most of their tread.

This car will be sold on a clear Florida title in the seller’s name. With a Le Mans-bred performance package, this timeless 1956 Jaguar XK140 MC OTS appears to be highly presentable.

This car might, just might, have originally been speced with Sandcast H8 carburetors. It is a very rare 9:1 CR 140, so it is already one of about 82 of these made. The carburetors are not original to the car so there is no clue there other than that they are replacements for something. There is a manual choke mounted in the dash in the correct position for H8s. In addition, there is a blank plate mounted on the intake manifold where the Otter switch would have been for a standard H6 setup with an automatic choke. If it has an original distributor without vacuum advance, that would be another clue. It is interesting that the Hemmings Auction description never mentioned the 9:1 CR. This one might have been sold under the radar, and is certainly worth further investigation.
