Details
Project Car
The XK 140 was introduced in October 1954, retaining the classic XK lines but with major changes in engineering and appearance. Inside the front seat and dashboard remained the same, but with considerably more leg room than the XK 120 because the engine block was moved forward on the chassis. The was also space behind the front seat. The Special Equipment models were designated "MC" and, like the car represented here, were fitted with wire wheels and Lucas FT576 foglamps mounted above the front bumper. The dual exhaust system had two separate silencers and ran through holes in the chassis cross members, emerging below the rear overriders.
Chassis prefix A for special equipment (SE) model also known as XK 140 M
Chassis prefix S for SE model with C-Type cylinder head

Car to be at auction 2/12
www.bonhams.com/usa/auction/19680/lot/362/
Auction description:
Sale 19680 - The Scottsdale Sale, 19 Jan 2012
Arizona, Scottsdale
Lot No: 362
1956 Jaguar XK 140 3.4 Liter MC Fixed-Head Coupé
Chassis no. S814613
Engine no. G4603-8S
*3.4-liter straight six
*210hp
*'Barn discovery' recently extracted from 20 years of storage
*In running condition
*Desirable MC specification
A Special Equipment performance package was created for the XK-140 and examples so equipped, such as the Fixed Head Coupé here offered, were designated MC models. The MC engine featured a higher-compression "C-type" cylinder head and had a dual exhaust system. The MC further included a pair of Lucas FT576 fog lamps, which were mounted above the front bumper...a subtle tip-off to the 210hp special performance engine lurking under the bonnet.
Exhibiting a pleasingly vintage patina, the offered left-hand drive XK-140 FHC is a genuine MC model, authenticated by its accompanying manufacturer's Heritage Certificate. The certification reveals the XK-140, now painted maroon with a black interior, was original finished in Pearl Grey, with dark blue interior piped in grey. The car's first owner apparently resided in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Having recently emerged from more than 20 years of dry collector storage, the XK-140 MC FHC has recently been revived and is expected to run at the sale, but will still require full servicing to make it roadworthy. The car is mostly complete and is fitted with Jaguar chrome wire wheels. The interior is essentially serviceable as-is. A period-correct Blaupunkt push-button AM radio resides in the dash. The wood dashboard and interior trim is original, with minor and readily repairable damage evident on the driver's side.
A great candidate for a Concours-level restoration, this rare MC model XK-140 might also represent an extraordinary opportunity for the Jaguar connoisseur wishing to obtain their first vintage edition.
The XK-140 FHC is presented with a California title.
Estimate: US$45,000 - 55,000

Sellers description:
1955 Jaguar XK140 MC Fixed Head Coupe
- Matching Numbers w/ Heritage Trust Certificate
- Factory Correct Pearl Grey over Dark Blue with Grey Piping
- Desirable MC (or SE) Package
- Chassis No. S814613
- Engine No. G4603-8S
Offered for sale is an incredibly elegant and rare 1955 Jaguar XK140 MC Fixed Head Coupe finished in factory correct and timelessly sophisticated Pearl Grey over Dark Blue leather with Grey piping, a rare original factory specified trim option. It presents spectacularly, having just undergone a thorough cosmetic freshening while remaining mindful of originality. The car comes with a Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate proving that it is an original, numbers matching "MC" Fixed Head Coupe.
Only 1,959 left-hand-drive fixed head coupes were built, the lowest production run of the model. The most desirable option available was the Modified Competition (MC) package, or the Special Equipment (SE) as it was known in the European and International markets. This package included dual exhausts and fog lamps as well as, more importantly, a C-Type cylinder head (derived from the Le Mans winning C-Type Jaguars) and two larger H8 SU carburetors, a combination that brought the stock XK140 horsepower from 190 to 210. If you've been looking for an investment grade sports car that's still at a price point where you can enjoy the full range of ownership (instead of just trailering it between shows and your climate controlled garage), then the XK140 MC - and this car specifically - deserves your serious consideration.
This car was originally distributed through Charles Hornburg of Los Angeles, delivered to its first owner in Corpus Christi, Texas where it enjoyed a well-loved existence, kept out of the elements and getting both regular use and maintenance until the late 1970s. It then made its way to California where it received similar treatment before being put away into dry storage around 1985. It remained there until 2006, when the heir of the deceased second owner discovered it and revived it mechanically. At that time the odometer showed a mere 32,000 miles, believed to be correct after analyzing the condition of the car and its mechanicals. It was used as a very original weekend driver until early 2012, which is when we were fortunate enough to have acquired it.
Shortly thereafter we began the year-long process of returning it to its original road-going glory, taking it completely apart, stripping it to bare metal, refinishing it in its original color, re-chroming everything, reupholstering the interior to its original factory specs and having the renowned Madera Concepts refinish the extravagant burled walnut dash and interior wood train. The engine ran strong with excellent compression, but the brakes needed to be completely rebuilt and a new stainless steel dual exhaust was installed for good measure. The undercarriage was thoroughly cleaned and detailed to ensure that it was completely original and solid. When entirely stripped there was no evidence of accident or rust repairs anywhere on the car.
It's one of the most beautiful cars ever designed, iconic and revolutionary, and every true enthusiast's garage - be it that of a significant collector or humble weekend driver - is deserving of a Jaguar XK. This is an exceptional and correct example that checks every box on a serious buyer's checklist: rare and desirable MC option, finished in a timelessly elegant color combination, heritage certificate correct with a provenance that indicates a dry, well-cared-for history. Please bid accordingly.
Please Note: Due to a clerical error, the car is currently titled as a 1956 year model. This should be simple to change upon transfer of title, especially considering the presence of the Heritage Trust certificate.
