Auction description:

Lot 103

Scottsdale 2020

1955 Jaguar XK140 Drophead Coupe

Estimate: $80,000 - $90,000 Without Reserve

SOLD $112,000

Chassis: S817776DN

Sophisticated Dark Blue and Pale Gray Color Combination

Superb Left-Hand-Drive Model with Overdrive

Restored by Wellwood Auto Restoration

Highly Refined and Perfect for Touring

Accompanied by JDHT Certificate and Extensive Documentation

This car cruised out of the factory on August 23, 1955, wearing Pearl Grey paint with a red interior and black top. It was immediately dispatched to Hornburg Jaguar in Los Angeles, and, although its early days are largely undocumented, at some point received a replacement 3.4-litre XK150 engine. It was later restored by Wellwood Auto Restoration of Ventura, California, a process that included a cosmetic restoration in dark blue paint with a gray top and pale gray interior. The engine was rebuilt by Frank Monise Motors of Montclair, California, and all systems were stringently addressed. Fresh from restoration, the car was acquired by its current owner on October 22, 2014. In 2018, XKs Motorsport of San Luis Obispo, California, completed a full inspection and work, to the tune of over $30,000. The mechanical and electrical systems were rebuilt or renewed, as described in the accompanying documentation. A new top was also installed by XKs Unlimited. More recently, in late 2019, the mechanical systems were reviewed, serviced, and found to be in excellent order, including the overdrive.

Beautiful to behold and dynamic to drive, this lovely statesman of the Jaguar line is a superb choice for drivers with a penchant for power and pedigree.

This 1955 Jaguar XK140 SE is a left-hand-drive drophead coupé that was manufactured on August 23, 1955 and originally distributed by Charles Hornburg in Los Angeles, California. The car was refurbished in the late 2000s before being acquired in 2014 by its previous owner, who commissioned an additional mechanical refresh in 2018 from XKs Motorsport of San Luis Obispo, California. Power is provided by a replacement 3.4L inline-six that was sourced from an XK150 and is backed by a four-speed manual gearbox with overdrive. Additional equipment includes front disc brakes, a dual exhaust system, wire wheels, and a leather hood strap. Finished in dark blue over ivory leather, this XK140 DHC is now offered by the selling dealer with a Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate, invoices from recent work, a copy of an owner’s manual, and a clean Florida title.

Originally finished in Pearl Grey, the body was repainted in its current shade of dark blue during a refurbishment carried out in California prior to the previous owner’s acquisition in 2014. A new convertible top was fabricated during the 2018 refresh. Driving lights and dual exhaust outlets were factory features on Special Equipment models, and this example has also been fitted with a double-buckle leather hood strap.

The 16” wire wheels are secured by two-eared knock-offs and wear Michelin X tires showing 2015 date codes. Wilwood disc brakes have been added up front, and drum brakes are retained out back. SE models feature heavier torsion bars than standard XK140s, and the suspension in this car was reportedly refreshed in 2018.

The cabin was re-trimmed during the late 2000s in ivory-colored leather with blue piping, in lieu of the original red upholstery. Contrasting blue carpeting lines the floors, center tunnel, and seat backs, and a set of black and blue Coco mats have been added in the footwells. Lap belts are in place for each front occupant, and additional interior repairs were made in 2018.

A four-spoke steering wheel sits ahead of the burled wood dash, which houses Smiths instrumentation including a 140-mph speedometer and a reverse-sweep 6k-rpm tachometer. The speedometer, clock, and combination oil pressure/coolant temperature gauge were repaired in 2018. The five-digit odometer shows 22k miles, a handful of which have been added by the selling dealer.

The 3.4-liter DOHC inline-six (V4931-8) is said to have been sourced from an XK150 and was rebuilt during previous ownership. Induction is through twin SU carburetors, and the cooling system has been updated with an electric fan. The cylinder head is painted red, the color used by the factory for XK140 Special Equipment heads. An oil change was performed by the selling dealer in April 2020.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual gearbox and a Laycock de Normanville overdrive. The transmission was removed for repairs to the shift fork in 2018, at which time the driveshaft U-joint was also replaced. Additional underside images are presented in the photo gallery below.

The Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate lists the original colors and delivery information and also notes the non-original engine. Invoices from work carried out by XKs Motorsport in 2018 are included.
