This 1955 Jaguar XK140 MC is a drophead coupe that was built on August 24, 1955, initially delivered to Hornburg Jaguar in Los Angeles, California, and refurbished in 2012 by Steve’s Jaguar Service in Canoga Park, California. Finished in red over biscuit leather upholstery, the car is powered by a factory 3.4-liter inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission with Laycock de Normanville overdrive. Features include dual SU carburetors, a tan soft top and parade boot, 16″ knock-off wire wheels, front disc brakes, Lucas driving lights, a burl walnut wood dash, Smiths instrumentation, and a Becker Europa II AM/FM stereo. The car was acquired by the seller in late 2012, and work performed since 2021 involved cleaning the carburetors, servicing the ignition components, and replacing the fuel tank. This XK140 is now offered with a Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate, service records, a tool kit, and a clean Florida title in the seller’s name, listing it as a 1957 model.
The drophead coupe features an integrated windshield frame, roll-up side windows, and exterior door handles. This example was finished from the factory in British Racing Green and was refinished in red during the aforementioned refurbishment. Additional exterior details include a tan soft top and parade boot, Lucas driving lights, fender-mounted mirrors, and quarter vent windows.
Replacement chrome-finished 16″ wire wheels are secured with two-eared knock-off spinners and mounted with 185-series Universal Sport tires. A full-size spare is stowed in the trunk. The independent front suspension was overhauled and powder-coated during the refurbishment, and the hardware was zinc-plated at that time. Braking is provided by discs with red-finished calipers up front and drums mounted at the rear.
The front and rear seats were re-trimmed in biscuit leather in 2012. Equipment includes a dashboard-mounted rearview mirror, a locking glove compartment, door map pockets, and a Becker Europa II AM/FM stereo.
The four-spoke steering wheel sits ahead of a burl walnut wood dashboard housing Smiths instrumentation consisting of a reverse-sweep tachometer with a 5,500-rpm redline and an inset clock along with a 140-mph speedometer and auxiliary gauges. The fuel level gauge was replaced in April 2015. The five-digit odometer shows 84k miles, approximately 4k of which have been added under current ownership. True mileage is unknown.
The MC 3.4-liter inline-six is equipped with a C-type cylinder head as well as dual SU H8 carburetors that were cleaned and adjusted in May 2021. The radiator was re-cored and additional work included replacing the distributor cap and rotor, spark plugs, and ignition coil. The alternator was replaced in 2018.
Cylinder head stamping is G4859-8S and corresponds to the engine block, reproduction chassis tag, and removed factory chassis tag are will be supplied with the car.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission with an electronically actuated Laycock de Normanville overdrive unit. A stainless steel exhaust system was installed during the refurbishment, while the fuel tank and sending unit were replaced in July 2023.
The Jaguar Heritage Trust Production Record Trace certificate lists factory colors and drivetrain numbers as well as initial delivery to Hornburg Jaguar in Los Angeles, California.
