Bought S818234 from Mark Adams in October, 1988. Mark had started the restoration and was a Jaguar mechanic. Also a vintage racer in an XK140 roadster. Ran his XK140 roadster in the Ely, Nevada open road race. Also ran the roadster at Bonneville I believe exceeding 200 mph. Don't know where that is written down in the records.

Mark drove this car from Washington state to Tucson without taking out his tool roll. A commentary on his good workmanship. He had overhauled the engine and done all the metal work and painted it old English white. It had black upholstery in it and a black top(worn out). This car was given a concours restoration here. He had taken the original "C" Type head, I believe, for his race car. I bought another "C" head and had it rebuilt by XKS Unlimited. The interior wood was redone. All new interior with Red Connolly hides, Wilton wool carpets and proper Hardura and vinyl. A new black top with proper chrome pin beading, and English wool headliner was installed. New chrome wire wheels with 6.00 X 16 bias whitewalls were installed. A new gas tank was installed and new stainless steel exhaust system. This car had no overdrive, but it had a close ratio gearbox that was the nicest shifting box I have driven in an XK.

We sent the car to Christie's auction in Terrytown, New York in 1996. Subsequently it was sold a year later in Monaco for about $28,000 less than Christie's got. This was a wonderful car and very reliable driver. Nice steering, nice stopping and nice shifting. I have not seen or heard of this car since it was sold in Monaco. If you run across this car it is a really good autombile!

I have resubmitted the data from the chassis data plate and the build record from Chassis Records - Browns Lane. I have the original chassis data plate to S818234. If an owner shows me proof of ownership they may have the plate.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
