Car to be at auction 4/09
www.bonhams.com/cgi-bin/public.sh/pubweb/publicSite.r

Auction description:
Sale 17254 - Collectors' Motor Cars and Automobilia, 20 Apr 2009
RAF Museum, Hendon
Lot No: 389
1958 Jaguar XK150 3.8-Litre Coupé
Registration no. JDX 256
Chassis no. S824634DN
Engine no. ZA5890/8
Estimate: £24,000 - 28,000

This particular XK150 Coupé’s accompanying Jaguar/Daimler Heritage Trust certificate reveals that it was manufactured as a 3.4-litre model equipped with overdrive transmission, sold new via Botwoods in Ipswich and first owned by one Ernest W Birkett, of Orford, Suffolk. The car was comprehensively restored between 2006 and 2007, and after completion was used to illustrate an article in Jaguar World magazine (August 2007 edition, copy available). ‘JDX 256’ comes with photographs of the restoration and a list of all the work carried out, which included a bare-metal re-spray; rebuilds of the engine, gearbox and rear axle; overhauling the suspension and brakes; rewiring the electrics (now 12-volt); and replacing the clutch, radiator, headlights, over-riders, wheels, etc. Bills on file total over £16,000. The car had covered approximately 5,000 miles since the restoration when it was acquired by the current vendor in September 2007. Finished in Old English White with all-new red leather interior, this lovely XK150 is offered with the aforementioned documentation, a list of previous owners and Swansea V5 registration document.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
