Offered at Bonhams auction Quail Lodge Sale, 18 Aug 2011 to 19 Aug 2011 California, Carmel
Catalogue description:
1958 Jaguar XK-150 Open Two-Seater
Chassis no. S-830717
Engine no. V3528-8
With this year's excitement concerning the 50th Anniversary of the Jaguar E-Type, it should be noted that similar enthusiasm greeted the Jaguar XK-120 in 1948. Its flowing lines and high speed capability were a bright spot in a United Kingdom not entirely recovered from World War II.
The production run lasted through 1954, when the XK-140 was introduced. The final iteration of the first XK line was the XK-150 which made its debut in 1958. It was a larger, more comfortable car, with the refinement of a decade's detail improvements in it. The same six-cylinder, double overhead cam engine provided the power and the purr of the Jaguar still perked up one's ears.
The XK-150 line consisted of a Drop Head Coupe, a Fixed Head Coupe and an Open Two Seater.
Our offered example is a 1958 OTS. This is the rarest of the three body styles, comprising only 13% of the production. It is also the most satisfying in appearance. With the top down, there is no sign of it and the smaller cockpit combines with the one piece windshield to create a cleanliness of line. On the DHC, a larger cockpit and bulkier top require a boot to cover the retracted top, diminishing the sporting appearance.
The car has dual carburetors and the sky blue color of the engine block denotes it as a Special Equipment model. It's 210 horsepower engine provides spirited performance and as one of the first production cars fitted with four wheel disc brakes, this XK-150 stops as well as modern traffic.
The car has been restored to original by well-known Jaguar specialist, Brian Anderson of Classic European. It is finished in Imperial Maroon with a Sand interior and top. The approaching view is enhanced by driving lamps and two sets of running lights. The tool kit and manual are with the car. Since purchased in 2006, the vendor has taken home Best in Class awards at seven Concours d'Elegance and finished 2nd at the Jaguar Clubs of North America National meet.
Estimate: US$75,000 - 85,000
