One of the most enticing of all Jaguar XKs, this rare, factory-delivered 3.4-litre S Roadster was completed in Coventry in July 1958 and finished in the gorgeous, rarely-seen livery of Cotswold Blue. Originally delivered through Jaguar Cars New York, it wasn’t until March 9, 1960, that it found its first owner, Mr. E. A. Harrington of Santa Barbara, California.

During his ownership, Mr. Harrington had the engine block replaced reportedly under warranty and almost a decade after acquiring the Jaguar, sold it to a collector in San Jose. The second owner drove the XK sparingly before putting it on blocks in his San Carlos warehouse. The car sat untouched for 15 years until Ralph Zotovich, an avid Jaguar enthusiast, added the rare roadster to his growing collection. At that time, he brought the Jaguar back to running condition with little more than a service and oil change. In 1997, Mr. Zotovich sold his prized S Roadster to its current caretaker.

Never having left the mild climate of California, the S Roadster was an ideal candidate for a high-quality restoration. A full nut-and-bolt restoration was soon commissioned with famed Jaguar specialist Bill Price performing all of the essential electrical and mechanical work, and Images Auto Body tending to the cosmetics. During the process, the engine, transmission, rear end, overdrive and braking systems were rebuilt, a new wiring harness was installed and each ancillary component was restored. The body was stripped and the seams were re-leaded before it was painted in its rare original color. The brightwork has been re-chromed, the trim polished, the undercarriage powder coated and a custom stainless steel exhaust system installed. The interior was upholstered in blue with Wilton carpets and the car was fitted with color-coordinated seatbelts, a dark blue StayFast canvas top and chrome wire wheels wearing period-correct Avon tires.

Since completion, the sleek XK Roadster has driven along the Pacific Coast Highway and on Jaguar Club Tours. With its fastidious restoration work and delightful appearance, it was awarded First in Class at the M.A.J.O.R.S. Concours in San Louis Obispo and has been displayed at prestigious shows such as the Quail, Hillsborough and Palo Alto.

This XK has held up remarkably well and has recently benefited from meticulous, professional paintwork and thorough cosmetic freshening. In June of this year, Bay Area Jaguar garage De Longs performed a complete service that included a tune-up, fluid changes and the replacement of hoses. The owner reports that the drivetrain has covered approximately 1,500 miles since restoration and states that, during his ownership, it has never failed to be a smooth, fun and reliable driver.

Offered with a Heritage Trust Certificate, largely complete tool kit, custom-made tonneau cover, thousands of dollars worth of receipts as well as the pristine original owner’s manual, this superb and beautifully finished XK150 S Roadster is sure to continue attracting positive attention wherever it goes and will undoubtedly become its next owner’s pride and joy.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
