    1960 Jaguar XK 150 3.8 Roadster
    €290.000 - €340.000
    RM | Sotheby's - MONACO 2018 - Offered on: Saturday, May 12, 2018
    Chassis No. S 832171 DN
    Engine No. VA 2265-8

The second-to-last known surviving XK 150 Roadster
One of just 36 XK 150 3.8 LHD Roadsters built
Fully restored, with original engine, special equipment and desirable optional overdrive
Long-term ownership in the southern U.S.

A very late-production example, the second-to-last XK 150 3.8 Roadster known to survive and the fourth-to-last XK 150 Roadster completed, is without question the ultimate expression of performance of Jaguar's renowned XK-series, as it incorporated virtually every development and improvement that had been discovered in over a decade of production. Most important is the added horsepower and performance of the venerable Jaguar 3.8-liter straight-six, along with Special Equipment and optional ($165.00) Laycock de Normanville overdrive, which makes for comfortable highway cruising.

Completed in November 1960, this car spent much of its life in the Southwestern U.S., with one former owner, Alan Cruce, a Texas-based Air Force veteran, retaining the car for more than 23 years. Lured by the sound of the 3.8-litre engine, he enjoyed this car for only a short time before departing to undertake pilot training, from which point this XK 150 was rarely used. After years of dormancy, the car was purchased by its current owner and shipped back across the pond, where it was completely restored to the excellent standard in which it is currently presented.

This is a very rare opportunity to acquire a lovely XK 150 3.8 Roadster, with a matching-numbers engine and with Special Equipment and factory overdrive. With just 36 cars built in this configuration, it is an excellent example of one of the rarest variants of the Jaguar XK line and holds a special place in Jaguar history.

    • The second-from-last-built XK (by chassis number)

    • One of only 36 left-hand drive XK150 3.8-litre Roadsters

    • Special Equipment, optional factory overdrive

    • Matching numbers example

    • Professionally restored

Please note that this motor car is located in Belgium.

A very late example, completed in November 1960, this XK150 is one of only 36 examples of the 3.8-litre open roadster built in left-hand drive configuration, and is the second-from-last car by chassis number (the sequence ended at '832173'). Meaning it is the second to last (by chassis number) XK to leave the Jaguar factory between 1948 and 1961 in existence. Extremely rare, it is a Special Equipment model equipped with the optional Laycock de Normanville overdrive, which makes for comfortable high-speed cruising. Delivered new in 'Carmen Red' over black interior, as presented today, '832171' spent much of its life in Texas, USA with one former owner, Alan Cruce, who kept the XK for more than 20 years. Following Mr Cruce's departure to undertake pilot training, the car was rarely used. Many years later the Jaguar was purchased by its current owner and shipped to Europe where it was professionally restored. Restoration photos accompanying the car show it being restored from bare metal. We're advised by the vendor that the chassis frame was completely rust free, that the body was in good condition and that during the restoration only minimal bondo and thinning was applied. The vendor advises us that the car retains its original engine and gearbox. Hardly driven since the 2000-hour plus restoration, the car is still in excellent condition today. '832171' comes with Croatian registration documents.

With only 36 built, this left-hand drive XK150 3.8 Roadster represents a wonderful opportunity to own one of the marque's rarest variants; in Special Equipment specification and boasting a matching-numbers engine and factory overdrive.

    The Interior

    Retrimmed black upholstery

    New black carpets

    Professionally restored

In roadster specification, the XK150 provides seating for two, with ample luggage capacity for a few days away. The cabin in this car has been exceptionally well finished, having been restored professionally in 2019. Since then the car has barely covered any miles, and this shows in the presentation on the interior - it’s as close as you’ll see to a brand new XK150.

Whether you’re looking at the upholstery, carpets, switchgear or instruments, everything shows in pristine condition. Even the boot area, finished with smart black carpeting, looks almost new. Under the floor is a full size spare wheel, along with a tool kit.

    The Exterior

Finished in its original ‘Carmen Red’

Chrome finish 16” wire wheels with new tyres

    New black fabric hood

As can be seen from the restoration photos that accompany the car, it was taken back to bare metal and comprehensively rebuilt. The vendor tells us that the chassis was remarkably free from corrosion (likely due to many years spent in the Texan climate) and the bodyshell itself was in such good condition that no new panels were needed.

The car was refinished in its original factory build specification – Carmen Red with a black fabric roof. The paint itself has clearly been applied to a high standard, and looks to be excellent. Similarly, a new fabric roof has been fitted, and thus is in as-new condition.

All of the external trim and brightwork is complete and looks to be in superb condition, with no evidence of damage or wear we could see. Riding on classic, polished-finish wire wheels with new tyres, this XK150 looks every inch the matinee idol’s daily. That swooping bodywork is still capable of stopping traffic and dropping jaws, even after 62 years.

Underneath, the car presents very well, being superbly clean and tidy with no evidence we could discern of damage, corrosion or any issues. All of the drivetrain elements, floor pans and chassis rails appear to be exceptionally well kept.

    The Mechanics

    ‘Special Equipment’ model

    Optional Laycock de Normanville overdrive

    3.8-litre straight-six with twin SUs

    Manual 4-speed transmission

    Stainless steel exhaust system

In this specification, the XK150 is an incredibly rare car. Not only is this a 3.8 ‘Special Equipment’ model, but it has been fitted with the optional overdrive. This key feature makes for very comfortable high-speed cruising and allows the car to run perfectly well even in modern traffic.

That 3.8 straight-six makes a tremendous sound and pushes a healthy 220bhp to the rear wheels through Jaguar’s 4-speed manual. Keeping everything pointing in the right direction, the XK150 had some truly advanced drivetrain elements for the time. It was the first production car with all-round disc brakes (based on the Dunlop system Jaguar’s race teams used) and features independent front suspension.

Mechanically, the car has been restored with a similarly meticulous eye and careful hand as the bodywork and interior. Under the bonnet, the engine bay looks as close to factory fresh as we think possible.

We’re told by the owner that the car runs perfectly, with no mechanical issues that they are aware of.
