Ebay item 4/4/11
gallery.me.com/dadyatt
Car rolls freely and steers, but the engine, seats, and brakes have been removed... a trailer will be required for transporting this car to your destination. The engine/transmission are original to the car, but are currently mounted in a roll-around stand. This stand is part of the auction, and goes with the engine.
The seller has owned this Jaguar since January 1972. When acquired, the car had already been damaged in an accident. The aluminum bonnet (hood) had come loose and bent back over the top of the car. Because of the damage, the seller immediately began the process of what was hoped would be a frame up restoration. The car was disassembled and the important parts were stored indoors. The engine was rebuilt (new rings and bearings)... preserving oil sprayed into the cylinders... and then the engine was set aside. The engine does turn over, with a big breaker bar, even after all these years. The car itself has always been stored under roof, kept dry, but in an unheated space.
The car's previous owner had begun the repair work on the right front wing. He had a vocational school's students do the bodywork. The seller removed their plastic body filler to see what was underneath. There are the usual rust issues that Jaguars of this vintage often have. The body has never been off the frame.
On the plus side, this is a car with many original parts. For years, it's all just been stored away... awaiting restoration. The car and its parts are being sold "as is", with no guarantee as to condition or usefulness. The buyer will receive all the 1958 Jaguar parts shown in the photos. There will be some additional minor parts... but, bid on what you see.
Here are some of the parts that are NOT included, as they were missing when the seller acquired the car in 1972:
Windscreen washer bottle
Chrome trim strip that goes down the center of the bonnet
Chrome trim strip that goes across the top of the windscreen
Gears that go in the tachometer drive behind the camshaft
Tool roll and lead hammer that go in the boot
The original steering wheel
The car's batteries were discarded years ago.
Here is a partial list of things that are included, but have deteriorated to the point that they are no longer useful:
Leather interior (was in bad shape even in 1972)
Headliner (metal stays are present)
Rubber seals
Wiring harness
Exhaust system (original mufflers are long gone, cast iron manifolds OK)
Windshield wiper arm and blades
Tires and tubes (still hold air, but are too old to rely on)
Here's a partial list of original components that hold the most potential to be useful:
(Still... keep in mind that it is being sold "as is".)
Fuel tank (no leaks when it was removed... and still seems solid)
Bumpers (the front one was straightened, polished, and re-chromed)
Radiator (a small leak was fixed by a radiator shop many years ago)
Engine (the seller was 22 years old when he did this overhaul - 38 years ago)
Automatic transmission (might want to have a shop take a look at this, but it was OK)
Instrument panel (been stored in a plastic bag, inside, for years)
The glass (one of the small side vents is cracked, and there's a light scratch on the windscreen, apparently caused by the wiper arm on the passenger's side. All the glass is present and accounted for: front, back, both doors, and both rear quarters).
Seat frames
Dash plywood
Here is a partial list of original components that are included, but their usefulness is unknown. Some might be rebuilt and put back into use:
Brake calipers
Brake rotors
Brake assist servo unit
Electric fuel pump
Sending unit for the fuel gauge
Turn indicator switch
The grille (in pieces... it needs to be re-brazed, polished, and chromed)
Chrome trim pieces (many will need to be re-chromed, some will clean up)
The aluminium bonnet (needs final bodywork and welding, braces were removed for initial straightening work)
The car's body (not terrible, but needs work...
The car's frame (the front part is OK, the back is suspect on the driver's side, due to rust. The frame doesn't appear to have been damaged in the accident long ago.)
The wire wheels, (5) including the spare
Here are some spares that were acquired over the years:
Bumper over-riders (reproductions) (4)
Headlight outer trim, chrome (NOS) (1)
Flasher lamp assemblies (reproductions)
Side lamp assemblies (reproductions)
