Jaguar XK 150 Drophead Coupé (1959)
The Jaguar XK 150 is a gem. A showpiece that has not lost any of its pure glamour. Equipped with the beloved XK ‘S’ engine, it is able to put such precious exotics als the Aston Martin DB Mk III, and even the Mercedes 300 SL ‘Gulwing’ to second plan. The ‘S’ engine is recognizable by its orange painted cylinder head: straight intake ports with three SU HD8 carburettors prepare a healthy diet for the engine. The legendary 3.4-liter six-cylinder in the slender nose of the XK 150 S delivers a smooth output of no less than 250 hp. That is even 35 hp more than the high-revving six-cylinder injection engine of the 300 SL!
Compared to the million euros you need to pay for a Gullwing these days, the 1959 Jaguar XK 150 Drophead Coupé offered by Peet Classics is a real steal – even while it deserves a ‘concours condition’ rating. Top quality was the target during restoration. The ladder frame was sandblasted and then galvanized; one less thing to worry about in the future. Every part in this particular XK 150 was brought back to to ‘as new’ condition: all bolts and nuts have been disassembled, everything has been restored professionally and with a keen eye for detail.
This Jaguar XK 150 Drophead Coupé was originally delivered in Italy, with a black painted body and a red leather interior. After 54 years, the car got a new residence in Belgium, where the car underwent its top quality restoration. The owner has chosen to deviate from the original color scheme: the car was painted in Gunmetal Gray and fully covered with dark green leather and wool carpet, of the very best quality.
In 2016, shortly after completion of the project, the car came to the Netherlands, where its new owner traveled just 5600 kilometers. This explains the flawless condition of the car. But this car has definitely not been restored to leave it forever in an air conditioned garage. Numerous modifications (that are easy to rectify) take the driving pleasure the XK 150 already had on offer, to an even higher level.
For example, the car is equipped with electric power steering. After revision of the engine at Satink Classic Car Creations (where the block has been upgraded to ‘S’ specification), it was coupled to a Getrag five-speed gearbox. The rear axle has been overhauled by Ben Kolvenbach. Electronic ignition, a high-torque starter motor, an alternator and a Kenlowe cooling fan make this beautiful car suitable for covering long, fast distances. For even more travel comfort, tailor-made seats from the Jaguar XJS have been installed. All original parts, including the gearbox, are supplied with the car.
