    Sellers description:
    1959 Jaguar Drop Head Coupe
    3.4L

4 Speed Manual Transmission with Electric Overdrive

Cotswald Blue – Blue Convertible Top

    Red Leather Interior

After owning for the past 34 years, it’s time to part with my 1959 XK150 Drop Head Coupe.

I stated the mileage at 99999 due to the fact the odometer and speedometer were not functional when I purchased the car... This issue was promptly repaired...a bad drive gear on the transmission. I don't know the true mileage of the car before purchasing... The odometer was at 6839 miles. I do know, the car has been driven approximately 3000 miles in the past 35 years.

The car was purchased and first registered in early 1960. The title shows the year as a 1960 but determined it is a 1959 due to the small tail lights. In 1960, Jaguar changed the tail light assemblies to a larger type.

The car was purchased new from Overseas Motors in Fort Worth, Texas by a wealthy Texan for his wife. The wife insisted on having a car with Air Conditioning so Overseas Motors crafted and installed an AC unit in the car. The blower assembly is mounted in the back of the trunk and the dual fans pump air from the back of the car to the front. Similar to the Jaguar MKII scheme. Need a compressor for the AC to be operational…

I purchased the car in September 1972 in El Paso, Texas the city where I grew up and resided in until 1980. When I purchased the car, it had been setting in the car port next door to my in laws for several years. Feel it important to note the condition of the car when I purchased it 34 years ago.

The engine would start easily but had two rods knocking.

The Paint was very sun damaged but did clean up fairly well.

Convertible top was in sun damaged and needed replacing.

Leather interior was hard due to dry climate.

Chrome extremely nice except for scratches on the bumpers.

Body undamaged and totally rust free due to being in a very dry climate.

The car was totally complete and had not been molested.

After purchasing, I pulled the engine and replaced it with a 3.8L from a 1963 E-Type. Please don’t worry, I didn’t discard the original engine and transmission. By the way, an elderly gentleman who was a master Jag mechanic befriended, taught and helped me during my early years of Jag ownership…Moving from Chevy's to Jags was a big step.

I drove the car on and off until 1980 when we moved to Germany. During our 7 year stay in Germany, the car was stored on jack stands in my mothers garage… All procedures were carried out for long term storage.

When we moved back to the United States in 1987, our new home was Virginia Beach, VA where we currently reside… At that time, the car and our other belonging were put in a moving van and transported to Virginia.

From 1987 to 1998 the car was driven once or twice a month, usually around the block a few times to keep things working… but mostly, it just sat in the garage. It seemed every time I drove the car something else quit working and needed repair.... due to such a long time in storage.

In 1998, I went to a British Car Show saw a beautiful XK150 Drop Head Coupe owned by Mr. Ed Dotson. At that moment, I was inspired and motivated to make my garage queen a show winner.

In 1999 the restoration project started.

The original engine and transmission were totally rebuilt. Abacus Racing in Virginia Beach, VA rebuilt the transmission, rebuilt, set up and adjusted the valves in the cylinder head. Also, did all the machine work on the engine. Engine was bored .0010 with new pistons and a used .0020 - .0020 crank shaft was installed.

In 2000, David Laughton of Coventry Classics (another good friend and master Jag mechanic and restorer) assisted me in removing the body from the frame. Please note, before removing the mounting bolts, a diagram was made of all the mounting points and these were numbered. Each bolt with shims and spacers were placed in a numbered ziplock bag for proper re-assembly. The body was placed on a custom made dolly for proper support. Then the body was transported to Guns Body shop in Gloucester, VA for the body and paint work. Please note, this body is totally rust free and no panels have ever been replaced. Guns body shop, removed doors, fenders, hood and trunk lid and painted each separately.

While the body and paint work were being done. I removed everything from the frame. The Frame was cleaned and painted… reassembly of the rolling chassis began…. Some key points.

    Koni Shocks
    Front End completely rebuilt.
    New Fuel Tank…
    Fuel tank sending unit rebuilt.
All Brake wheel cylinders lined with brass… also new Lockeed brake booster.
New fuel lines from tank to carbs… incorporated a back-up fuel pump for emergencies.
New 16in Wire Wheels with Stainless Steel Spokes.. with original black wall bias ply tires.
After a year, the body and rolling chassis were reunited… At this point, the body is properly reattached to the frame.
Complete new wiring harness is installed from front to back.
Front and Rear bumpers are re-chromed by Royal Plating in Norfolk, VA. All other chrome pieces original in very nice condition with no pitting.
One small deviation from original. The wings behind the front bumpers are chrome instead of being painted the color of the body.
Everthing else with exception of interior and top are properly reinstalled at this time.

The last part of the restoration process is the top and interior.
Purchased a complete interior and top from OSJI (Original Specification Jaguar Interiors) in Muncie IN. Put the car on the trailer and transported the car to Muncie. Gary at Muncie Imports and Classics installed the top and interior….. beautiful job.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
