Striking, sporting XK with a massive spec and huge history file. Really rather special

According to the register, RBN 376 began life on 17/03/60 as a Fixed Head Coupe finished in Pearl Grey with a red interior before being despatched to Parkers in Bolton. Over the next 55 years, this remarkable car has been entrusted to a number of specialists and the history file is two feet deep so we are going to paraphrase where possible (this file will be available from our documents desk during the Sale).

In 1990/91 the car spent some time at Peter Thurston, Classic Jaguar Specialists in Herne Bay for a full restoration and it may have been at this time that it was converted to a Drop Head Coupé. The invoice for circa £58,000 suggests that the work was substantial. Post-1991, the car was maintained by KJC Bell who's invoicing up until November 1999 totalled £22,000. The owner prior to our vendor bought the Jaguar at this point and sent it to Twyford Moors for a competition upgrade and modifications to Rally spec. They had the car up until August 2000 and charged around £60,000. The Jaguar was returned to Twyford in 2005/2006 for further upgrades and the fitting of a 'Sigma' competition engine and this time the bill was £58,000 (all of this is in the file).

Our vendor purchased the 150 in August 2008 and it has since been maintained by Pearsons Engineering (Gary Pearson).

Basic Specification and Modifications:

Sigma competition engine (fast road/rally). Getrag 5-speed gearbox

16x 6.5 D-Type wheels + 15" wires

Alloy rad. Kenlowe fan. Competition oil cooler

Alternator. Electronic ignition. Battery cutouts

Upgraded rear and fog lights

Power steering. Poly bushed + Spax all round. Geometry reset

Comp pedal box. Split/adj brakes with 4-pot calipers

Plumbed-in fire eater. Brantz rally meter. Upgraded heater

Alpine sound system. Sat nav. Fitted luggage and tonneau

Front and rear tow hitches. Travelling spares.

Obviously, there is quite a lot more but space does not permit.

This is a striking, sporting XK and appears really well-prepared. If you enjoy motorsport and love classic Jaguars, you will not be able to walk by this amazing car. We welcome any inspection and please feel free to contact the office should you wish to view this cars interesting history in advance of the sale.

Seller's description:

Chassis no: T825184DN

This Jaguar XK150 is an original UK right hand drive 3.8 S model. It was delivered to Parkers in Bolton in 1960 and was finished in Pearly Grey with Red interior. The car was originally built as a fixedhead coupe but during an extensively restoration in the 1990s it was expertly converted to a drophead coupe. Much of this cars history since restoration is documented in an extensive history file.

The car has since been extensively upgraded with much of the work carried out here at Twyford Moors during the 2000s with bills running into the tens of thousands. This XK150 has been upgraded in a very driver focused way and features many performance modifications. The triple carburettor engine was rebuilt to fast road specification by Sigma Engineering in 2005/2006. The engine is matched up to a five-speed gearbox and the car benefits from four pot aluminium brake callipers and vented brake discs. The suspension is similarly improved to handle the increased performance with polyurethane bushes, adjustable shock absorbers and an uprated antiroll bar. The motorsport look is completed with bonnet and boot straps, a set of Dunlop Racing wheels and Yokohama tyres. To improve reliability and usability the car features electronic ignition, an alternator, electric cooling fan, expansion tank for the cooling system and power steering. Finally, the interior has been upgraded with a walnut dashboard, CD, radio and satnav, a Brantz rally meter and a pedal box.

Don't be fooled by the sporting look and impressive specification; this car is a very comfortable and civilised car to drive on the road and would be ideally suited to touring. Get the car on a track or a rally stage and you could really open her up and make the most of the performance.

This Jaguar XK150 3.8 S has had no expense spared in its restoration, improvement or subsequent maintenance. It is stunningly presented and, on the button, ready to go with no need for further improvements. A true driver’s car.

Seller's description:

1960 Jaguar XK150

Mileage 36,595 Miles

Country United Kingdom, Region Sussex

This chassis actually left the factory in March 1960 as a fixed head coupe and finished in Pearl Grey with red interior on route to supplying dealer Parkers of Bolton. In 1990-91 it enjoyed a full restoration by classic Jaguar specialist Peter Thurston in Kent and during this period it’s believed the drop head conversion was carried out; the invoice for this period was £58k. Post 91 and up to the millennium the car was maintained by KJC Bell when another £22k was invested after which a new owner requested XK specialists Twyford Moors in Hampshire for a competition upgrade and modifications to Rally spec. The work took around 8 months to complete costing around £60K and five years later the car returned for further upgrades including the fitting of a Sigma competition engine to the tune of £58K. August 2008 saw a new custodian who asked engineer Gary Pearson to maintain the XK before the current owner took over in May 2020 after purchasing the car via Twyford Moors. They would continue to look after RBN 376 up to date with work starting in June 2020 including fresh tyres, brakes plus the fitting of parking sensors. A month later new exhaust manifolds and powder coat to the heater box improving under bonnet visuals, then in May 21 new carpets plus overmats, hood lining and re-trim of the rear quarter panels completed the wonderful interior. Finally, in September 21 the engine enjoyed new mountings and a tune; a total outlay of just under £10k in two years, since when it has been kept in heated storage.

Exterior finished in period Carmen Red, the mohair hood shows no signs of wear whilst the chrome bumper and over-riders are recent having been requested by the current owner. The boot carries a new spare wheel and tyre (never fitted) plus tonneau, cover and bags. The 46 spoke chrome wires are wrapped in Brockley rubber and having inspected the underside on a ramp the conclusion was ‘very good’ with chassis and panels showing minimal age. Close inspection revealed two tiny stone chips on the front edge of the bonnet and unmarked wheel arches. Interior enjoys red leather seating with matching carpets and trims, all in excellent order much of which has been fitted over the past few years. Veneer on the door caps and dash are superb and sit well alongside the original Bakelite door pulls and Motolita steering wheel. The intrusion of rally equipment is minimal, discrete power isolator and blue tooth connection whilst the Brantz trip metre sits under the dash and blends in nicely. Hidden bottle for the ‘plumbed in’ fire extinguisher with floor mounted rings to accommodate a pair of safety harnesses. Wonderfully prepared keeping the originality of the model foremost, this XK can rally on a Saturday then show to concourse standard on Sunday and here at Country Classic Cars we welcome any inspection.

The current specification includes Sigma competition engine (fast road/ rally). Getrag 5-speed gearbox, 48 spoke 15" wire chrome rims, alloy radiator, Kenlowe fan. Competition oil cooler, pedal box and alternator. Electronic ignition. Battery cut-outs, upgraded rear and fog lights Power steering. Poly bushed + adjustable Spax all round. Geometry reset, split/ adj brakes with 4-pot calipers, plumbed-in fire extinguisher. Brantz rally meter. Upgraded heater, alpine sound system. Sat nav. Fitted luggage and tonneau, front and rear tow hitches.
