MYD 337 is a historic survivor. Not only was it one of the best known racing XK120s throughout the 1950s and 1960s, but it was also one of a handful of these competitive cars that was prepared for its enthusiastic owners by arguably the most successful specialist tuner of the period. That was none other than 'Dick' Protheroe, he himself probably the most successful exponent of the model. MYD 337 was tuned by him for Flight Lieutenant J.A.Mays and Protheroe's bills remain with the car confirming some of the major modifications which he carried out.
In the mid 1960s the car passed to well known club racer, Duncan Bray who continued to race very successfully in the car in the face of increasing opposition from new and more nimble machinery such as Jaguars' own E-type. Subsequently the car found its way to Canada where after suffering clutch failure it was laid up for 20 years. Repatriated in the in the early 1990s it was acquired by the vendor, a prominent historic racer who undertook a comprehensive 5 year rebuild. This work was completed in the mid 1990s making the car a reliable and fast road car with underlying racing intentions. Indeed the vendor has competed in several appropriate races performing well on each occasion.
The current spec comprises the original Protheroe engine rebuilt by specialists VSE to road/race trim which is coupled to a full synchro overdrive gearbox. It features Koni shock absorbers all round, a Harvey-Bailey anti-roll bar and Poly bush kit which replaces the metalastik originals. Brakes are inevitably uprated to disc all round with servo assistance and to keep it cool an aluminum radiator with separate header tank replaces the original.
Finished appropriately in British Racing Green with new 16" chrome wire wheels, an FIA roll cage and Suede Green trim this is a superb representative of the XK model range ideal for fast road or track use. In addition it boasts a genuine period history making it more likely to receive entries to some of the most popular historic events and a connection with one of the most famous names associated with Jaguar racing history; Dick Protheroe.
