It would be good to see some pics before the restoration commenced

When a pal set eyes upon my newly-acquired 670503, he squawked that he simply MUST have one. We looked in Exchange & Mart, and found one in Finchampstead, for £50. Arriving in my 120 we found it was red, rather rusty, but absolutely complete - with all brightwork, hood, sidescreens and matching numbers. This was August 1968.

He was rather daunted by the amount of work required, but made a start. I think the squirrel's nest was the last straw, howver. He offered me the car for what he had paid for it. I nicked various bits from it, including the grille, and sold it to another chum for £35.

Nearly thirty years later I was researching pictures for a book (on XKs of course!) when I came across a photo of Roy Salvadori of F1 and Le Mans-winning fame, whizzing around Silverstone in the early 1950s.

I fetched a print of this to my friend who was quite pleased. (This is amassive understatementcopy of the photo

...who was quite pleased. (This is a massive understatement.) I assumed this friend still had the car until I spotted it in a recent Mille Miglia event.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
