The drophead coupe offered far more comfort and weather and wind protection. Not only is the drophead coupe the rarest of all production XK120s with just 1,765 produced, but it was also the 120 of choice for many touring motorists, on account of its blend of refinement and practicality with fresh-air fun. Moreover, today’s 1954 example is one of just an estimated 370 drophead coupes from the final year of production. Boasting its original sheet metal, matching-numbers drivetrain and the original tool kit, it is also documented with a Jaguar Heritage Certificate. Yet, this multiple-award winner is even more distinguished for being a two-owner California car with original sheet metal and a mere 500 miles under its tires since its 2015 restoration.

This 1954 Jaguar XK120 Drop Head Coupe was delivered new to Southern California and was acquired by the seller’s father in Oakland, California in 1960 from its original owner. The car reportedly was stored from the mid-1960s until 2000, when the seller and his father began a refurbishment in which the body was removed from its frame. The project was completed in 2015, and nearly 700 miles have since been added. Now finished in silver over a gray leather interior, the car retains its numbers-matching 3.4-liter inline-six and four-speed manual gearbox. Additional features include a gray soft top, matching boot cover, steel wheels with Jaguar hubcaps, and burl-wood interior trim. This DHC is now offered with a Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate, receipts and records, manuals, a partial factory toolset, restoration photos, and a clean California title.

The car was delivered new in Pastel Blue, and during the 2000s refurbishment the body was removed from the frame before being refinished in silver. Features include a gray soft top and matching boot cover as well as chrome trim and dual exhaust tips. Black California vanity license plates are currently installed, and a set of refurbished vintage black plates is included in the sale.

Silver-painted 16″ steel wheels wear Jaguar hubcaps and are mounted with 185-series Vredestein Sprint Classic tires.

The car was originally delivered with a blue interior, and the cabin has been refreshed with gray leather upholstery and matching carpeting.

A four-spoke steering wheel sits ahead of a burl-wood dashboard, and matching wood trim extends throughout the cabin. Centrally located Smiths instrumentation includes a 140-mph speedometer, a reverse-sweep 6k-rpm tachometer with an inset analog clock, and auxiliary gauges. The odometer was reset following the refurbishment and now shows just under 700 miles.

The 3.4-liter inline-six was rated to produce 160 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque when new. Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission. The oil was changed in late 2019. The engine-block stamping reads F1293-8, which matches what is indicated on the data plate as well as the JHT certificate. The cylinder head shows the same serial number, and a numbers-matching gearbox stamping.

The Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate indicates a manufacture date of December 15, 1953 as well as serial numbers, the factory color scheme, and initial delivery to Los Angeles, California.

A binder of photos and receipts, a newspaper clipping, factory manuals, and other documentation will accompany the car. The seller states that approximately $80k was spent over the course of the project.

This 1954 Jaguar XK120 Drop Head Coupe was built on December 15, 1953 and remained with its previous owner in California for 60 years before being acquired by the seller’s father on BaT in June 2020. The car underwent a body-off refurbishment that was completed in 2015, and power is provided by a numbers-matching 3.4-liter inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission. Additional features include a gray soft top, matching boot cover, steel wheels with Jaguar hubcaps, and burl-wood interior trim. This DHC is now offered by the seller on behalf of his father with the removed radiator, spare paint, receipts and records, manuals, a partial factory tool kit, refurbishment photos, a Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate, and a clean California title.

Originally finished in Pastel Blue, the body was removed from the frame and repainted in its current shade of silver during previous ownership. The car is equipped with a grey soft top and boot cover along with chrome bumperettes.

Silver-painted 16″ steel wheels wear Jaguar-script hubcaps and are wrapped in 185R16 Vredestein Sprint Classic tires.

The seating surfaces have been reupholstered from blue to grey leather with matching interior panels and carpets complemented by a burl-wood dashboard and interior trim. Amenities include two-point seat belts, a heater, and an analog clock.

A four-spoke steering wheel sits ahead of a reverse-sweep tachometer with a 5,200-rpm redline and a 140-mph speedometer. The five-digit odometer indicates 672 miles, around 20 of which were added during current ownership. True mileage is unknown.

The 3.4-liter inline-six was factory rated at 160 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. An oil change was performed in 2019.

Engine block stamping F1293-8 matches the number stamped on the cylinder head as well as that displayed on the Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate.

Power is delivered to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission.

The Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate indicates a manufacture date of December 15, 1953 along with serial numbers, factory colors, and original distribution through Hornsburg Jaguar of Los Angeles, California.
