This car was my father's lifelong obsession and love. He bought it and began restoring it shortly before I was born, and finished it about 18 years later. I am now the custodian of this car and will keep it exactly as he built it and in its current state.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
