Sellers description:
Presented by Kurt Tanner Restorations for your consideration here on Ebay is a rare and desirable Jaguar XK140 Roadster or Open Two Seater (OTS).
HISTORY
This vehicle was purchased approximately 5 years ago from the second or third owner, an eighty-year-old man who owned a ranch in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He purchased the vehicle from a local college student some time in the late sixties. It is a completely matching numbers vehicle, standard specification, 180 bhp, 4-speed, standard wheels, rear wheel spats, originally finished in Pastel Green with Tan trim, Biscuit piping. The recorded mileage of 62136 appears to be correct, and was confirmed by the previous owner. The car was only used locally and sparingly on the owner's ranch. The original New Mexico license plates are dated from 1972. The car ran and drove when purchased, although the brakes were a little weak, and there was also a noisy exhaust leak. The car will currently yard drive once the battery is charged up. All instruments and switches have been left connected for this purpose. Throughout the car, on the undercarriage, there is evidence of the reddish/ brown dust and dirt that is common to the Albuquerque, New Mexico area. Up to my ownership, the car has never been apart or disassembled.
BODYWORK
After I purchased the car, I started a body-on restoration by carefully removing all exterior chromework and some interior pieces, but only the parts that needed to be removed for the current work at hand. A few minor sheetmetal repairs were made in front of the rear wheel area, behind the b-posts. The car was very carefully stripped to bare metal with aircraft stripper and all minimal bodywork issues attended to. Proper and careful bodywork was then carried out on the entire car. It is currently in primer, with a final epoxy sealer coat applied to the moving panels (hood, doors, and trunk). Also, the spat set and splash aprons were likewise primed. The car is very straight and correct, and only needs some additional front fender wheelarch work along with some final hood to engine bay opening gapping. I have invested at least $10k in labor and materials to further the restoration process to this point, and the car is close to receiving some lovely paintwork, which can be chosen by the new owner.
CHASSIS
The chassis on the car is excellent and straight, with no signs of any rust-through or accident damage. All components are original and correct to the car. The rear springs have been replaced at one time. The front suspension could use a rebuild or at least replacement of it's rubber components. The steering box feels nice with no play in it. The brakes were leaking when I purchased the car, so I assume they will need renewing. All over the undercarriage, there is this dusty, dry dirt from the previous owner's use which should steam clean off nicely revealing a well-preserved original chassis.
MECHANICALS
Totally complete, original, never-been-apart engine, transmission, differential, etc. I had the vehicle running for about 30 minutes at one time, and there was some valve noise. I would assume there would be some work necessary after all these years of use and some sitting periods. However, the car will start up on the button, run, drive, brake, steer, and move nicely under it's own power. The engine bay is highly original with even some nice, decent paint in some areas. The drivetrain is completely original and both the head and block match the data plate. All fuel lines and brake lines are still connected up. Fuel pump works well, and instruments register.
CHROME FITTINGS, INTERIOR TRIM, AND WEATHER EQUIPMENT
Although this car is partially disassembled, it is absolutely 100% complete, and I will guarantee it's completeness. All pieces were carefully removed and boxed, and those items have not been moved and are still in the same boxes.( photos) It was a totally complete vehicle when it was purchased, and it remains the same today. Chromework overall was in very good condition, with some items excellent enough to reuse. The front grille is very nice. Bumpers will need to be replated, but some exterior chrome and interior trim fittings were nice. The windshield frames were surprisingly very good, but the sideposts need to be replated. All lights, clips, clamps, small hardware, etc were carefully removed and stored. Even the original interior trim in Jaguar Tan was delicately removed, preserved, and saved. The car is complete with all of it's weather equipment including softtop and frame and original sidescreen set. The seats pictured in the car have the original upholstery still fitted. There is evidence of the original paintwork in several places. The steering wheel and hornpush look nice and very restorable. The trunk panelling/ carpet was removed and revealed a very solid, rustfree trunk compartment. I have the two other hubcaps not pictured in the photos.
OVERVIEW
Overall, this 1955 Jaguar XK140 Roadster presented here is an excellent opportunity to acquire a true classic and desirable Jaguar postwar sportscar. Rarely do nice, solid cars like this come up for sale with a completely matching numbers drivetrain and known history with few owners. The car comes with the old New Mexico title, that matches the original license plates.
