This information is written on the inside back cover of a second-hand copy of Phillip Porter's book "Original Jaguar XK" now in my possession and which I recently bought. It clearly has been owned by an XK owner whose name---McGrand---is written on the inside front cover.
He also records that the fuel gauge registers 1/8th full = 2 gallons. 1/4 full = 3 gallons. Just under 1/2 full = 5 gallons. 1/2 full = 6 gallons.
