Auction 22725:
Goodwood Revival
12 Sep 2015 13:30 BST
Chichester, Goodwood

This XK120 comes with a Jaguar Vehicle Information Sheet showing that it was manufactured as a left-hand drive roadster and despatched new to Hoffman's in New York, USA in February 1954. The car retains matching chassis, engine and gearbox numbers, and we are advised that its engine now produces 210bhp, having been fitted subsequently with the desirable C-type cylinder head. The XK was originally finished in Pastel Blue, its colour today.

Its history is not known prior to the early 1990s when the car was sold at auction to Germany, being described at that time as a solid 'barn find'. The new owner kept it stored for several years before selling it to a buyer from Finland. The Finnish owner then consigned the car to a German specialist where a 'last nut and bolt' restoration was carried out to a high standard, the work being completed in 2009. Only slightly in excess of 200 miles have been covered since then and the XK remains in commensurately excellent condition. It also benefits from a major service carried out in June 2015 (bills available) and is ready to be enjoyed.

Car to return to auction 11/17

Auction description:
Mercedes-Benz World
November 25th 2017
Lot 267 - 1954 Jaguar XK120 Roadster
Registration 501 UYO
Chassis Number S674964
Engine Number F20688S
Odometer reading 503 miles
Estimate £90,000 - £120,000

Sold initially through world-famous Hoffmans of New York, this lefthand drive example was built in 1954 and sold just a week later, on the 17th, to David Roland Evans from the Napa Valley in rust-free California. The history is sketchy between then and 1993 when it was imported back to Europe through the Bremerhaven shipping terminal in Germany.

We pick up the trail again in 2009 in Finland and a lot of water has passed under the bridge. It appears to have been owned for some time by Jouka Oja, a collector of note. It was under his ownership that it underwent a complete restoration in Germany. It was completely dismantled by specialists followed by a no-expense-spared chassis, body and engine restoration over a reported eight year period. The engine has been uprated to fast-road specification as attested to by an experienced Jaguar C-Type racing driver with all brakes and moving parts stripped and thoroughly rebuilt. The engine was also uprated to circa. 237bhp complete with desirable sand-cast carburettors, high volume aluminium radiator/Kenlowe fan and stainless steel exhaust. The interior is also of extremely high calibre; the matching blue leather, carpets and soft-top are all of fine quality and restored to original manufacturers specifications. It has since undergone approximately 500 shake-down miles in order to bed everything in. No issues were reported.

With a final bill thought to be in the region of £200,000, it is not difficult to see why. The cost of the donor car matched to the sort of quality of work that you only hope other people have paid for and makes for quite a stunning Jaguar. The colours work and it has been very well put together. Indeed, with a new MoT test certificate, the soul of this car is very much alive and looking forward to the open road.

On March 31, 1953, this Baltic Grey XK120 DHC left the factory and made the journey across the ocean to America. How long the car had been in America is unknown. In September 2000, this rare XK120 Drop Head Coupé was found in England after a Dutch client had asked to search for one. The order was short and to the point; find a left-hand drive XK120 DHC with matching numbers that can then be restored to perfection. Due to the fact that the XK120 had been in production for only 18 months, this was not an easy job. Immediately after its arrival in The Netherlands the car went to the renowned restorer Bart Holland in Boskoop for a several years-long thorough restorations. Neither costs nor efforts were spared to bring this car to its present condition. It was stripped and starting from bare chassis reassembled screw-by-screw. Needless to say, all rusted and/or worn parts were replaced by new or reconditioned ones. No part was left untouched, the entire bodywork, chrome parts, brakes, instruments, the entire woodwork, upholstery, the electrical circuit, the lighting, tyres, windows and of course also the engine, the gearbox and the drive train, in short, the whole car was overhauled. All work is documented and is substantiated by photos and receipts. The current price for this unique XK120 DHC is only a fraction of the costs incurred. After the restoration the first Dutch owner used the car only sparingly and had it meticulously serviced. We are extremely proud to be able to offer this unique XK120 DHC, a car in such a condition is very rare.

The beautiful paintwork in the original factory colour Baltic Grey is immaculate, the chrome work is in superb condition. The beautiful leather upholstery of the front seats and doors harmonizes perfectly with the beautiful shiny burr walnut of the dashboard and the interior trim. The car is a paragon of traditional high-quality British automobile manufacturing. Of all production cars of this period the XK120 is certainly the best performing and the most enjoyable to drive. All XK models have a simple and robust design and provide their owners with an unrivalled 1950’s driving experience at a reasonable price.
